NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
TOWN OF PETERSBURGH
PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the Petersburgh Town Board shall hold a public hearing on August 17, 2026 at 6 pm at the Town Hall, 65 Main Street, Petersburgh, New York. The purpose of the public hearing is to receive comments from the public on a proposed Local Law titled REGULATION OF LOCAL JUNKYARDS AND JUNK DEALERS.
The proposed Local Law is an amended version of a proposed Local Law which was previously discussed at a Public Hearing before the Town Board held on June 15, 2026. The amendments to the previous proposed Local Law clarify the definitions of “junkyard” and “commercial” as used in the proposed Local Law.
AS amended, the proposed Local Law provides for the regulation of commercial junkyards and the regulation of commercial junk dealers in the Town of Petersburgh. Specifically, any individual seeking to maintain a commercial junkyard or to store junk for commercial purposes would be required to obtain a license from the Town. The Local Law sets forth the application procedure for obtaining that license. Any applicant for such a license would have to go before the Planning Board or the Town Board for a public hearing. The Local Law further sets forth requirements relating to the operation of such junkyards, including location, fencing, and screening requirements, and requirements for fire safety.
The Local Law provides that the Code Enforcement Officer/Building Inspector of the Town of Petersburgh shall be the enforcement officer for the Local Law. It sets forth the penalties and remedies for operating a defined commercial junkyard without a permit in the Town of Petersburgh.
A copy of the proposed Local Law may be viewed at the Office of the Town Clerk during the clerk’s normal business hours. The proposed Local Law may also be viewed on the Town Website at Petersburgh.org.
