Appomattox Regional Governor’s School Receives 2026 Petersburg Heritage Award from the Historic Petersburg Foundation
Petersburg, VA — The Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (ARGS), which serves students from 14 school divisions in central and Tidewater Virginia, is proud to announce that it has been named a recipient of the 2026 Petersburg Heritage Award by the Historic Petersburg Foundation, Inc..
The award recognizes the outstanding archival work of the Historical Depths class, led by Mr. James Stoneking. Through their efforts, students have developed a series of publicly accessible digital collections, including several hundred oral histories, a comprehensive ephemera archive featuring newspapers, letters, and photographs spanning from the 19th century through the Cold War, and a dedicated archive preserving the history of Petersburg High School from 1918 to 1973. All materials have been carefully collected, curated, and organized by students and are available online at thearchiveproject.us.
This recognition highlights the commitment of ARGS students to preserving and sharing the rich history of Petersburg and the surrounding region. Through hands-on archival work, students in the Historical Depths class continue to make meaningful contributions to the documentation and accessibility of local history, ensuring these stories remain available for future generations.
Located in Petersburg, Virginia, ARGS provides specialized educational opportunities for gifted and talented students from 14 participating school divisions: Amelia, Charles City, Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, Franklin City, Hopewell, Richmond, Petersburg, Powhatan, Prince George, Southampton, Surry, and Sussex.
