๐Ÿพ Introducing Fur Baby Friday! ๐Ÿพ

Every Friday, the Petersburg Bureau of Police and Petersburg Animal Care & Control will spotlight some of the amazing pets, rescue stories, and furry friends that make our community special.

Whether they have four paws, a wagging tail, or a story that deserves to be shared, Fur Baby Friday is all about celebrating the animals that bring joy, companionship, and unconditional love into our lives.

We invite residents to follow along each week as we highlight local pets, promote responsible pet ownership, and showcase the important work being done to care for animals throughout Petersburg.

Because every fur baby deserves a moment in the spotlight. โค๏ธ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

Petersburg Bureau of Police | Juneteenth 2026

As we celebrate Juneteenth, the Petersburg Bureau of Police extends our gratitude to everyone who is helping make this holiday safe, meaningful, and memorable throughout our community.

Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our nation's history, honor resilience, celebrate freedom, and recognize the progress that continues through unity and perseverance. It is also a reminder of the strength that comes from neighbors, families, organizations, and public servants working together.

We appreciate the residents, visitors, event organizers, faith leaders, businesses, volunteers, and public safety personnel who are contributing to a positive and safe holiday across Petersburg. Your commitment to looking out for one another is creating an atmosphere where families can gather, celebrate, and enjoy this special day.

As celebrations continue throughout the community and into the summer months, we encourage everyone to remain mindful of one another, practice patience, and help keep Petersburg a place where community comes first.

From all of us at the Petersburg Bureau of Police, thank you for celebrating responsibly and helping make Juneteenth 2026 a safe and successful occasion.

Together, we honor the past, celebrate the present, and build a stronger future for Petersburg.

As communities across Virginia prepare for upcoming fairs, festivals, and summer events, we're looking back at how public safety was handled more than 155 years ago.

During the Petersburg Fair of October 1871, special police officers were sworn in and given authority to maintain order and oversee activities on the fairgrounds. While much has changed since then, the mission remains the same: helping ensure community events are safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for all.

This historic account was preserved through the Petersburg Public Library and the Library of Virginia and can be viewed here:

From the fairgrounds of 1871 to the community events of today, Petersburg's commitment to public safety continues.

As summer activities increase across Petersburg, our roads become busier with families traveling, children playing outside, cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians enjoying the warmer weather. The Petersburg Bureau of Police reminds everyone to slow down, stay alert, and share the road safely.

Whether you're driving through a neighborhood, heading to a community event, or traveling across town:

โœ… Obey posted speed limits
โœ… Put distractions away and focus on the road
โœ… Watch for pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections
โœ… Give bicyclists plenty of space when passing
โœ… Stay extra cautious in parks, neighborhoods, and school activity areas
โœ… Never drive impaired or fatigued

A few extra seconds of caution can prevent a lifetime of regret. The Petersburg Bureau of Police remains committed to keeping our roadways safe for everyone who lives, works, and visits our city.

Slow Down. Stay Alert. Save Lives.

๐Ÿ”’ Gun Safety Awareness Initiative โ€“ Week #2: Our Mission

At the Petersburg Bureau of Police, our mission is straightforward: help prevent accidental shootings and reduce gun-related harm through education, responsible firearm ownership, and strong community partnerships.

Too often, tragedies occur because a firearm was left unsecured, a young person gained access to a weapon, or critical safety information was missing. That's why this initiative is focused on prevention before a crisis occurs.

We believe safety starts at home and extends throughout the community. By promoting safe firearm storage, encouraging responsible ownership, and creating opportunities for positive dialogue, we can work together to protect our families and neighborhoods.

This effort is about more than gun safetyโ€”it is about building trust, strengthening relationships, and creating a safer Petersburg for everyone.

Because community safety is strongest when we all have a seat at the table.

Lock It. Store It. Protect Lives.

Every leader has a starting point.

For Deputy Chief Emanuel Chambliss, that journey began when he joined the Police Explorer Program at just 15 years old. What started as an opportunity to learn about law enforcement, leadership, and service to others eventually grew into a career dedicated to the Petersburg community.

Today, he serves as the Deputy Chief of the Petersburg Bureau of Police.

His story is proof that the experiences and decisions made as a young person can shape a lifetime of achievement.

If you're a young person who is curious about public safety, interested in developing leadership skills, or simply looking for a positive way to get involved in your community, the Petersburg Police Explorer Program offers an opportunity to learn, grow, and discover what is possible.

The next generation of leaders is already here. The question is: where will your journey begin?
