Grove Street Bridge Refurbishment Project - Impending Bridge Closure & Detour

The Town of Peterborough wishes to inform downtown residents and businesses that Grove St. will be closed to through traffic beginning on or around June 22, 2026, to allow for the refurbishment of the Grove Street Bridge. The anticipated start date is weather dependent and contingent upon the contractor completing work on the Elm St. Bridge as scheduled. At this time, the Elm Street Bridge project is progressing on time and on budget.

During the approximately eight-week construction period, motorists and pedestrians will not have access to the Grove St. Bridge or its sidewalks for travel between Grove St. and the immediate downtown area.

Alternative routes will remain available throughout construction. The Main Street Bridge, Elm St. Bridge, Summer St., High St., and Union St. will continue to provide viable detour options for both motorists and pedestrians traveling to and from downtown.
To help minimize confusion and maintain access to downtown businesses, detour signage for traffic approaching from the Route 101 corridor will be installed prior to the road closure. Additional project and traffic control signage may be placed as needed to help direct motorists and pedestrians through the area during construction.

This project is necessary due to the deterioration of the bridge and the need to address these conditions before they worsen and result in more extensive repairs and higher costs. The refurbishment effort has been several years in the planning and development stages and is being funded through the Greater Downtown Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this important infrastructure improvement project and encourage residents, visitors, and businesses to plan accordingly during the construction period.

REMINDER: Outdoor Watering Ban Remains in Effect

Thank you to everyone who has been helping conserve water. We would like to remind residents and businesses that outdoor watering restrictions remain in effect until further notice.

The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), in its most recent drought update issued on May 14, 2026, continues to recommend that public water systems and municipalities maintain outdoor water use restrictions due to ongoing drought conditions across the state.

According to NHDES:
• 75% of New Hampshire remains in drought conditions.
• Much of southern New Hampshire continues to experience significant long-term precipitation deficits.
• Groundwater levels and streamflows remain below normal in many areas.
• Drought conditions are expected to persist through at least the end of July 2026.
• More than 80 public water systems and municipalities across the state have implemented outdoor water use restrictions.

While Peterborough's water supply remains adequate, Town staff continue to closely monitor well levels and water system performance. Maintaining the watering ban is a proactive measure to protect our municipal water supply and ensure water remains available for essential household use, public health, and fire protection.

We appreciate the community's continued cooperation and conservation efforts. Every gallon saved helps protect our shared water resources.

Love Gardening (or Want to Learn)? Consider Joining Peterborough’s Volunteer Gardeners

A Note from Maude Odgers, Chair of the Parks Committee:

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” ~ Margaret Mead

Do you love to garden? Would you like to learn more about gardening? If so, keep reading.

A small group of dedicated gardeners have been taking care of the town gardens in the Peterborough Parks for over 30 years.

It’s a lovely and meaningful way to give back to our community, connect with like-minded people, working and learning about gardens. What could be better than adding more beauty to our town and the world?

We are always looking for new volunteers to join us, young and old. No garden experience is necessary. Many started with very little experience and now are very competent, happy gardeners.

All the volunteers can recount stories of the many people who stop by while we are in the gardens to thank us for our work.

We have heard that some people moved to Peterborough because they were so impressed with the gardens, their level of sophistication, and how well designed and meticulously cared for they are, stating that this must be “a good town to live in,” as Thorton Wilder coined in his play that he wrote while at MacDowell, “Our Town.” It is indeed a good town to live in.

In all the parks there are multiple gardens that we take care of and tend to. We meet every Wednesday, weather permitting, from mid-April to Mid-November. It’s come when you can and stay as long as you can. No pressure, ever.

If interested please contact me, Maude Odgers, at [email protected], or 603-582-3887.

If interested in the history of the town gardens please go to the town’s website to read how each garden came into being:
