Our flag has been placed at half-staff from today, until Sunday, May 24th. This has been done to honor fallen Firefighter/EMT Justin Hurd. Justin was a Volunteer Firefighter for the Mellott and Coal Creek Fire Departments, as well as an EMT for Fountain County EMS. We would like to encourage other area departments, businesses and agencies to do the same to honor one of our community servants. Rest easy our Brother, we will all take the watch from here.

One of our Department members was recently recognized for a milestone in the Fire Service. Most of you in the area know Phil Brannin. Phil started as a Firefighter with the Perrysville Volunteer Fire Department, added multiple skills, certifications, as well as serving as our Chief for 21 of those years. Phil was awarded with a plaque from the Indiana General Assembly, as well as his Gold Card and Challenge Coin from the IVFA to commemorate 50 Years of service to our community! Thank you Phil for you dedication and service to our community and residents!

PSA - We know with the rising temperatures, and everyone being stir-crazy due to the extreme cold temps, there will very well be more activities and adventures taking place outdoors in the next few days. Please take a few moments to discuss with you children and family the importance of ice safety. While it looks beautiful, and is, there is an unseen danger. We are fortunate enough to live beside the Wabash River in our little town. While you can see footprints on the ice, it is NOT SAFE to be on. Some ponds have frozen enough to support weight for fishing to be done. The difference is ponds do not have moving water. Ponds freeze at a predictable rate and thickness. The Wabash River, however, is constantly moving. This doesn't allow the ice to form evenly. So while you may see tracks on the ice, please do not assume it is safe to be on. With the rising temps, the ice will start to melt. You may be walking on 6" of ice or 1", with the possibility of being over just a few inches of water to several feet. Falling through is almost certain death, with the ice trapping you underneath and the frigid temperatures causing hypothermia and muscle paralysis in minutes. So, please enjoy the beauty that our lovely county has to offer, but please do it safely from the bank! Stay safe and God bless!

Update from Vermillion County Emergency Management Director Jimmy Miller, Jr., concerning the county’s travel status. As of this afternoon, due to heavy snowfall, Emergency Management along with the Board of Commissioners, have moved the county a “warning” travel status, the highest level. This means that travel may be restricted to emergency management workers only. Under this status, individuals are directed to:
• Refrain from all ravel
• Comply with necessary emergency measures
• Cooperate with public officials and disaster service forces in executing emergency operations plans
• Obey and comply with lawful directions of properly identified officers.

This is due to roads becoming heavily impacted by snowfall with drifting starting to form making roads difficult to travel. Also sub zero temperatures and wind chills are making roadways freeze. This combined with later sub zero windchills and gusts.

In addition, the Vermillion County Commissioners have announced that due to inclement weather conditions, the Vermillion County Courthouse and all satellite offices will be closed tomorrow, Monday, January 26, 2026.

The closure is being implemented to ensure the safety of county employees and the public. Essential services will resume when offices reopen during normal business hours.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official Vermillion County communication channels for updates regarding reopening or additional weather-related announcements.

We have also received confirmation that Clinton City Offices will be closed Monday.

All four local school systems – South Vermillion, North Vermillion, Southwest Parke and North Central Parke, have all announced eLearning days for Monday. For South Vermillion, this will be a synchronous (Live) eLearning day.

Ivy Tech has announced that buildings in Terre Haute and Greencastle will be closed and offices will operate virtually Monday.

Also, with temperatures remaining dangerously cold, Vermillion County EMA has announced warming centers in the following locations:
• Perrysville Firehouse: 132 W. Main Street Perrysville, IN 47974 (Manned Station)
• Vermillion County Courthouse: 255 S. Main Street Newport, IN 47966 (Contact the

Happy New Year's Eve! Just our annual year end post to give the public and idea of the calls we respond to throughout the year. Our department had a total 249 calls, as of the time of this post. Of those calls, 131 were Medical, 32 were Rescues (vehicle accidents/special circumstances), 40 Fires, 32 Mutual Aids (assisting other area departments), 14 Other runs (not classified as emergency), and no Haz-Mat calls. There were 1,073 individual responses to these calls. That means that our department members averaged about 5 personnel per call, overall. We continue to strive to provide the best possible service to the people in our districts we serve, and we feel truly blessed to be able to answer that call. We wish you all a safe and Happy New Year!
