The City has received several questions and concerns regarding the condition of four ash trees located in front of the Schaller Memorial Building.

Unfortunately, these trees have been severely impacted by the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive beetle that feeds on ash trees and has caused widespread damage throughout Ohio and across the Midwest. As a result, the tops of these trees have died and their overall health has continued to decline.

After evaluating the trees, City Urban Forester Dan Ledyard has determined that they should be removed and replaced with new, healthy trees. Removal and replacement are currently planned for late July or early August.

The photos in this post show the affected trees and the visible damage caused by the Emerald Ash Borer.

If you have an ash tree at home that may have been impacted by the Emerald Ash Borer or want to learn more about protecting ash trees from this invasive pest, contact Urban Forester Dan Ledyard at [email protected] for more information.

This week, construction work continued for both the Downtown Revitalization and Fort Meigs Road Ditch Projects:

๐Ÿšง Downtown Revitalization Project โ€“ The contractor continued electrical improvements at the public restroom facility on East Second Street this week. Crews removed outdated electrical wiring and one of the existing electrical panels in preparation for the installation of new wiring and a new lighting relay panel. Electricians also worked in the attic installing conduit as part of the upgrade project.

In addition, FirstEnergy was onsite to disconnect power to the traffic signal control boxes at the East Second Street and Front Street intersection.

Next week, concrete crews are scheduled to return to the area near Waterford Bank, while electricians will continue work on traffic control box foundations and conduit installation. This work is part of the ongoing preparations for the planned traffic shift during the week of July 6.

๐Ÿšง Fort Meigs Road Ditch Reconstruction โ€“ The contractor continued clearing and grading work along the ditch banks this week. To maintain water flow during construction, crews installed a temporary steel plate d**e and set up a pump system to divert water around the section of the ditch where the bottom is being raised.

The new ditch bottom at the drop structure is approximately six feet higher than the existing ditch. Water is pumped from the temporary d**e to the drop structure, which is designed to reduce the speed and energy of the water as it transitions down to the existing ditch elevation.

Next week, the contractor will continue grading work within the ditch. Sheet piling is scheduled to be delivered during the week of June 22, with installation equipment expected to arrive and begin driving the sheet piles during the week of June 29.

Congratulations to Matt Zeigler, Light Equipment Operator with the City's Department of Public Service, on receiving the Good Samaritan Award from the Safety Council of Northwest Ohio at last night's Hero Awards Banquet.

While plowing sidewalks during a winter storm, Matt noticed a concerning situation at the intersection of Route 25 and Eckel Junction Road. Two individuals inside a stopped vehicle were unresponsive, and the vehicle remained in gear with the driver's foot on the brake while positioned beyond the stop bar of the busy intersection.

Recognizing the danger, Matt quickly coordinated with fellow City employees to secure the scene. He directed a snowplow to position itself in front of the vehicle to prevent it from rolling into traffic and arranged for another City vehicle with flashing lights to protect the scene from approaching motorists until first responders arrived.

Thanks to Matt's quick thinking, leadership and calm response under pressure, a potentially tragic situation was avoided. We are proud to see his actions recognized and congratulate him on this well-deserved honor!

๐Ÿš“๐ŸŒฑ A Special Visit from Sprouts! ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿš“

The Perrysburg Police Division was proud to welcome the children and staff from Sprout Studios for a special behind-the-scenes look at our day-to-day operations.

During their visit, the Sprouts had the opportunity to tour our police facility, learn about the important role of our 911 Communications Center, meet members of our team, and get an up-close look at a Perrysburg Police vehicle. The visit provided a fun and educational experience while helping our youngest community members learn more about the people who serve and protect our city.

Building positive relationships with our community starts at an early age, and we are always grateful for opportunities to connect with local students and organizations. We hope the Sprouts enjoyed their visit as much as we enjoyed hosting them!

Thank you to Sprout Studios for stopping by and spending part of your day with us. We look forward to seeing you again in the future!

Have you seen this colorful but destructive insect? The spotted lanternfly may look pretty, but it poses a serious threat to our trees, plants and agriculture. We have seen thousands of them, especially at Orleans Park. If you see one, the best way to get rid of it is to squash it.

On Tuesday, July 14th at 6.p.m., join us at Orleans Park as we and communities across Ohio take part in the "Big Squish." Volunteers will be mobilizing to squash spotted lanternflies and scrape any egg masses they see on host trees.
