The Perry Kiwanis Club meets every Thursday, 12:00 noon at the Perfect Pear in Downtown Perry. The Kiwanis motto is “Serving the Children of the World”.

The Perry Kiwanis Club is committed to doing service that is close to our hearts and crucial to our community. Since 1938, our members have been making a difference in Perry, Georgia.

Perry Kiwanis was honored to welcome Philip Blinson as our guest speaker to share more about the incredible work of Families 4 Families.

Families 4 Families is a nonprofit foster care agency dedicated to connecting children in need with loving, faith-based homes while providing foster families with the resources, guidance, and ongoing support they need throughout their journey.

They are always looking for more foster families who are willing to open their hearts and homes to children in need. Every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and loved, and foster families can make a life-changing difference. 💙

We are grateful to Philip for taking the time to educate our club about their mission and the meaningful impact Families 4 Families is making in the lives of children and families throughout our communities.

Last week, the Perry Kiwanis Club welcomed Julie with the Junior League of Perry , who shared more about the organization and the many ways its members serve Perry and the surrounding community.

With the motto “Developing Women to Do a World of Good,” the Perry Junior League focuses much of its service on supporting women and children. Throughout the year, members participate in a variety of charitable projects, including Happy Hour care packages, adopting families at Christmas, and supporting local food pantries.

Upcoming service projects include preparing care packages for the Houston County Juvenile Court and Public Defender’s Office and creating goodie bags for Special Olympics athletes. The League is also looking for additional service organizations and charitable causes to support as it plans its spring calendar.

In addition to its charitable work, the Perry Junior League partners with other civic and community organizations, including the Museum of Aviation and City of Perry events. Members also host fundraisers and social events throughout the year, including a Halloween Bunco Night and a Valentine’s Day event.

Interested in learning more or getting involved? Tonight, August 19, the Perry Junior League is kicking off its new League year at Main Street Social in Downtown Perry! The event begins at 6 p.m. and is drop-in, making it a great opportunity to meet members and learn more about the organization.

The Perry Junior League meets monthly on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and is currently welcoming new members.

Recently, the Perry Kiwanis Club welcomed representatives from the Magnolia Garden Club, who shared an exciting project underway at Massee Lane Gardens in Fort Valley — the new Wellness Garden.

The Wellness Garden is being created as an inclusive and peaceful space for individuals living with memory loss, autism, and other cognitive, sensory, or physical challenges, as well as their families and caregivers. The garden will provide opportunities to engage the senses, enjoy the outdoors, and experience the therapeutic benefits of nature.

Accessibility is at the heart of the garden’s design. Sandra shared that the space is being planned so individuals with a wide range of mobility needs can experience the garden — even those who may need to enter in a hospital bed. There are also plans for UGA students to participate in garden therapy and other programming within the space.

The project is expected to cost approximately $247,000, with $56,000 already donated toward that goal. Organizers hope to complete the Wellness Garden by March of next year and are currently seeking additional sponsors and community support. Once completed, Massee Lane Gardens will permanently maintain and fund the garden.

Thank you to Police Chief Alan Everidge for speaking with the Perry Kiwanis Club about the important work of the Perry Police Department and the evolving public safety needs of our growing community.

Chief Everidge shared that, while violent crime continues to decline, calls involving mental health, fraud, traffic safety, and domestic violence are increasing. He highlighted the department's investment in specialized resources like its Crisis Response Team, K-9 Unit, drones, community outreach, and ongoing officer training to better serve Perry's residents.

He also explained how the Perry Police Foundation helps support these efforts through Georgia's Less Crime Act, which allows eligible taxpayers to redirect a portion of their state income taxes to the Foundation and receive a dollar-for-dollar state tax credit.

We were delighted to welcome special guests Chris Johnson and Michael Burke to the Perry Kiwanis Club! Chris and Michael are the talented artists behind the beautiful new mural on the Perry Players building, and we enjoyed hearing about the inspiration, creativity, and work that went into this exciting project.

This vibrant mural will be a wonderful addition to Downtown Perry, helping showcase the character, culture, and community spirit that make our city so special. Thank you, Chris and Michael, for sharing your talents and helping make Perry an even more beautiful place to live, work, and visit!

Last week, the Perry Kiwanis Club welcomed a Stephen Smith from NAMI Central Georgia to speak with our members during Mental Health Awareness Month.

NAMI Central Georgia is affiliated with the National Alliance on Mental Illness and is the only NAMI affiliate in the country with an attached residential program. Their organization works to provide education, mentorship, housing support, and resources for adults experiencing mental health challenges, while also supporting veterans and service members through partnerships with the VA and local veterans organizations.

Members learned about the organization’s residential services, which include medication management, meals, and supportive housing, as well as programs designed to help individuals transition back into the community. NAMI Central Georgia also offers work-study opportunities where participants can learn trades such as landscaping, automotive work, and carpentry, along with a gardening program supported by UGA Master Gardeners.

Stephen, who serves as Director of Peer Services and Facility Engineer, shared the importance of meeting people where they are and helping guide them toward independence and stability. The organization also works to build more Certified Peer Specialists — individuals with lived experience who can support others on their journey.

NAMI Central Georgia continues to expand its efforts through residential housing, mentorship, education, and community resources, with a long-term goal of developing more independent living opportunities for those they serve.

Last week, we were proud to recognize our April Scholar Athletes from Perry High School and The Westfield School! These outstanding students are nominated by their coaches and teachers for excelling both academically and athletically.

Issy Dehem is a senior at The Westfield School and captain of the Soccer Team. She consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic and genuine commitment in everything she pursues. She has excelled academically, maintaining an impressive 4.57 GPA while challenging herself with nine AP classes.

On the field, Issy has made a lasting impact on Westfield soccer, holding the record for most career goals and serving as a team captain. She leads by example, setting a high standard through her dedication, discipline, and character.

Issy plans to attend Wofford College to pursue a pre-med track, and we have no doubt she will continue to achieve great things
