Today, the Perry Police Department hosted a tactical medical training course taught by Lieutenant Andrew Bonsee of the Ralls County Sheriff’s Office.

We sincerely thank Lieutenant Bonsee for sharing his knowledge, experience, and time with the officers and other agencies who attended. His hands on instruction provided valuable skills that could help save a life during a critical incident.

LEO’s are often among the first to arrive when someone is seriously injured. In those first few minutes, officers may need to control severe bleeding, treat penetrating injuries, maintain an airway, or provide care while a scene remains unsafe for emergency medical personnel to enter. Tactical medical training prepares officers to begin lifesaving treatment immediately whether the injured person is a citizen, another first responder, or the officer themselves.

We also thank the Mark Twain Regional Council of Governments for allowing us to use their facility for this important training.

We appreciate Lieutenant Bonsee, the Ralls County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mark Twain Regional Council of Governments for helping area law enforcement officers remain prepared to protect and serve when every second counts.

Dove season opens today, September 1. Residents may hear increased gunfire in and around the area as hunters take to the fields.

Please do not be alarmed by lawful hunting activity. Hunters are reminded to follow all Missouri hunting regulations, obtain landowner permission, identify their targets, and remain aware of nearby homes, roadways, and livestock.

If you observe unsafe shooting or believe there is an immediate threat, contact law enforcement. Stay safe, and good luck to everyone heading out this season!

The first day of school is officially in the books!

One of my favorite responsibilities is activating my emergency lights and positioning my patrol vehicle to help children safely cross the roadway to board their bus.

I’m also happy to report that there were no reported school bus stop arm violations in town today. School bus safety is especially important to me because we have had several close calls over the years involving distracted drivers and children nearly being struck.

Please remain alert, slow down, and obey every school bus stop arm. Protecting our children will always be a top priority.

SCHOOL IS BACK IN SESSION

With students returning to school tomorrow, please slow down, remain alert, and allow extra time during your morning and afternoon commute.

Flashing yellow bus lights mean the bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and be ready to stop.

Flashing red lights and an extended stop arm mean STOP. On a two lane roadway, traffic traveling in both directions must remain stopped until the lights stop flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving or the bus driver signals you to proceed.

Missouri law requires drivers to stop for school buses that are receiving or discharging children under RSMo 304.050. Penalties for violations are established under RSMo 304.070.

!!NEW UPDATE!! Beginning August 28, 2026, a first conviction may result in:

• A fine between $500 and $1,000
• Five points assessed against the driver’s license
• A court-ordered driver’s license suspension

Penalties increase for repeat violations or when a child is injured.

Watch carefully for children walking, riding bicycles, or waiting near bus stops. Put the phone down, obey speed limits, and never drive around a stopped school bus.

The Perry Police Department will strictly enforce stop arm violations. Citations issued for these offenses will be upheld with ZERO warnings.

A few extra seconds of patience can prevent a tragedy. Let’s work together to keep our students, bus drivers, and school staff safe throughout the school year.

DWI–Drugs Arrest

On August 20, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Perry Police Department received a traffic complaint from a citizen regarding a vehicle traveling southbound on Highway J just north of Perry. The caller reported that the vehicle was driving erratically and driving on both shoulders of the roadway.

The vehicle was later witnessed and located parked across from the Perry Police Department. Following an investigation, Ammie Gaston, 47 of Perry was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated—Drugs, First Offense.

The Perry Police Department thanks the Ralls County Sheriff’s Office for its assistance.

All persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The opioid epidemic continues to affect families and communities across the country, and Perry is not immune to this crisis.

The Perry Police Department has a supply of free naloxone available to anyone in our community who may need it. Naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, is a medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose and save a life.

Whether it is for yourself, a family member, a friend, or simply to keep nearby in case of an emergency, you are welcome to stop by and pick up a dose. No questions asked and absolutely no judgment.

If you would like a dose, contact the Perry Police Department or stop by when an officer is available. Supplies are limited and will be provided free of charge.

Please share!! Having naloxone available could mean the difference between life and death.

ROAD WORK REMINDER

Road work is underway in several areas around town. Please slow down, watch for workers and equipment, and allow yourself a little extra time.

The work should be completed within the next few weeks. We appreciate everyone’s patience while these improvements are being made.

• Wear deodorant 😬

If you’re thinking about making bad decisions, I recommend you don’t (in the name of health)… But if you insist, we’d appreciate it if you could either wait until November or take your criminal activity to another jurisdiction where it’s substantially cooler.

**FIREWORKS ARE A GO**

Just a friendly reminder that fireworks are permitted within the City of Perry on July 3rd, 4th, and 5th from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.

As you’re celebrating Independence Day, please remember a few common-sense safety tips:

• Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby
• Light one firework at a time
• Keep children supervised
• Never attempt to relight a dud
• Be mindful of your neighbors, pets, and veterans
• Clean up any debris when you’re finished

We know everyone enjoys a good fireworks show, but let’s keep the holiday memorable for the right reasons. The Perry Police Department would greatly appreciate it if we could make it through the weekend without anyone testing the durability of their fingers, eyebrows, or the patience of local emergency room staff.

Pro tip: fireworks are supposed to go up in the air—not across the street, under a vehicle, or toward your cousin who says, “Watch this.”

Have fun, celebrate safely, and enjoy the holiday weekend.
