WWC staff and Advocates shared space for our Annual Board and Staff Retreat in beautiful traditional Wabanaki Territory near Katahdin. We had an informative presentation from Paul Cavanaugh, discussed important realities happening in our communities in preparation for upcoming OVW Tribal Consultation, and practiced guided self care through yoga and breathing exercises.
An abundance of joy, laughs, outdoor adventures, mentorship and more was shared!! Thank you to staff that were able to come and participate, we all do this work for a reason, and we acknowledge the time and energy everyone puts in not just on training days but everyday to help DV/SA survivors live a life free from violence. Woliwon for all you do for your communities, culture and generation!💫

If you or someone you know is a survivor of Domestic Violence, S*xaul Assault, Stalking, S*x Trafficking or Teen Dating Violence please reach out to your local Advocacy Center.

Today April 30th was recognized as Denim Day. WWC staff, Advocates and Shelter Aids from the Wabanaki Advocacy Centers all wore denim today at our quarterly Affinity Meeting to show support (photo taken at the Indian Island Pavillion - Penobscot Nation). We are sharing the story behind this important day (graphic warning for explicit content). The Denim Day story began in Italy 1992, when an 18-year old girl was r***d by a 45-year old driving instructor who was taking her to her very first driving lesson. He took her to an isolated road, pulled her out of the car, removed her jeans and forcefully r***d her. She reported the r**e and the perpetrator was arrested and prosecuted. He was then convicted of r**e and sentenced to jail. Years later, he appealed the conviction claiming that the s*x was consensual, leading the Italian Supreme Court to overturn the conviction and release the perpetrator. A statement from the Court argued that because the victim was wearing very tight jeans, she had to help remove them, and by removing the jeans it was not r**e but consensual s*x. This became known throughout Italy as the “jeans alibi.” Enraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament launched a protest wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. This protest was picked up by international media which inspired the California Senate and Assembly to do the same on the steps of the Capitol in Sacramento. Patti Occhiuzzo Giggans, Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, saw this in the media and thought everyone should be wearing jeans to protest all of the myths about why women and girls are r***d. Thus, Denim Day in LA was born. The first Denim Day in LA event was held in April 1999 and has continued annually since. Source: New York Times

Each year, April is recognized globally as S*xual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Its purpose is to raise awareness and prevent s*xual violence. It includes community outreach, education and policy change. Teal Tuesdays, typically every Tuesday in April, are days where people are encouraged to wear teal to show support for survivors and raise awareness about s*xual violence. Today, WWC staff and Advocates from all 5 Wabanaki Domestic and S*xual Violence Advocacy Centers are wearing teal to show our support.

Check out SPARC’s resources on adolescent stalking, stalking on college campuses, and stalking of older adults at StalkingAwareness.org/intersections-with-stalking to better serve victims of all ages.

Stalking is a traumatic crime that often co-occurs with other forms of victimization and that can affect specific populations in unique ways.

*Giveaway Time 🥳 There are two chances to get these items. They both have a circle sled, travel art and one has the game sorry! And the other has Trouble. We want to help foster creativity, outside fun and one on one family time. Make those core memories count! I swear kiddos always remember one on one time well into their adulthood and want to pass along to younger generations.

Just answer this question: What outside activity do you enjoy in the winter?

I will add your name to the wheel and the first one picked can choose from the game Sorry! Or Trouble! The second picked gets the remaining one the first picked. Local people to pleasant point please as we need to stay in the area.

I will keep this open for the week and will draw on Friday January 10th 2025 at 3pm.
