Good afternoon!

The Perry Village Police Department responded to 82 calls for service last week. Officers conducted 19 traffic stops, resulting in 7 citations. We also handled 3 traffic accidents. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in any of these accidents.

As mentioned last week, parking across a sidewalk is a violation of village ordinance. However, the ordinance permits parking across the sidewalk during the overnight street-parking ban, from midnight until 6:00 a.m. Please move your vehicles from across the sidewalk at 6:00 a.m. to provide a safe path for children walking to their bus stops. The overnight street-parking ban has also been adjusted to follow these same hours.

It was great seeing everyone at the Perry Fall Festival last Saturday! Some of you even accepted the challenge of dunking me in the dunk tank. The event was a tremendous success, and it was wonderful to see so much community support. The fireworks display provided a great ending to the evening.

Our Perry Pirates Varsity Girls Soccer Team is having a great season! The team will play Kirtland tomorrow night, September 15, at Perry High School. Good luck, ladies!

Congratulations to our Perry Pirates Varsity Football Team on its 62–0 shutout victory over Jefferson! The Pirates will take on Hawken in the Homecoming game this Friday.

The Homecoming Parade will begin Friday at 5:30 p.m. Due to the Manchester Road bridge closure, the parade will travel down Green Street to Logans Way, continue to Dugan Farms, and return to Manchester Road. Please expect additional temporary road closures along the route.

I look forward to seeing everyone at Homecoming.

Please join us in welcoming Officer John “Jake” Jacobson as the newest full-time member of the Perry Village Police Department!

Officer Jacobson was sworn in last night by Mayor Elias Coss and will serve our community as a full-time patrol officer and detective. With Jake’s appointment, the department is now fully staffed with full-time personnel.

Jake grew up in Northeast Ohio and spent much of his adult life in the great state of Oklahoma, where he met his fiancée, April. Together, they have four wonderful daughters and one incredibly talented son, who is attending the University of Akron to pursue a degree in music education.

Jake brings more than 20 years of law enforcement experience, having served in several capacities, including municipal police officer, deputy sheriff, lead investigator with the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office, and with the U.S. Marshals Service’s Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System—commonly known as “Con Air.”

Jake made the difficult decision to leave the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office, where he truly enjoyed serving under the leadership of Sheriff William Niemi. He will miss the colleagues and friendships he made there.

Having served Perry Village as a part-time officer for approximately two years, Jake has already had the opportunity to meet many of our residents.

“There’s something about Perry and the small-town atmosphere that gets me,” Jake said. “I look forward to showing up and helping wherever I can. Please feel free to stop and say hello!”

Reflecting on September 11, 2001

In a small town, we show up for one another. We know our neighbors and their families, and we understand what it means to look out for each other and lend a helping hand.

Twenty-five years ago, our nation was reminded just how important community is.

On September 11, 2001, our country experienced an unimaginable loss. We remember the 2,977 innocent men, women, and children who never came home. We remember the firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and everyday Americans who displayed extraordinary courage and compassion in the face of tragedy. We remember the families who lost loved ones, as well as the first responders and survivors who continue to carry the physical and emotional scars of that day.

Time should never erase the lessons of September 11.

We remember those who ran toward danger to help others. We remember the kindness of strangers and the unity of communities that came together when our nation needed it most. We remember so that the lives lost are never reduced to just another date in history—because every life, every family, and every sacrifice mattered.

As police officers, we are especially mindful of the first responders who answered the call that morning. They knew the risks, yet they chose to go anyway. Their courage reminds us why we wear the badge, why we take the oath, and why we stand ready to serve our community every day.

Today, we pause, remember, and reflect.

We fly the flag.
We say their names.
We check on our neighbors.
We hold our families a little tighter.
We teach future generations what happened and why it matters.

And we never forget. 🇺🇸

🚔 FROM THE CHIEF’S DESK 🚔

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday yesterday. Due to the holiday, I am posting this update today; however, the statistics below reflect activity only through Sunday.

Calls for Service and Parking Reminder

Last week, the Perry Village Police Department handled 73 calls for service. Officers conducted eight traffic stops, resulting in four citations. As with the previous week, no parking violations were reported.

Please remember that parking a vehicle across a sidewalk—even when the vehicle is parked in a driveway—is unlawful. Keeping sidewalks clear allows pedestrians to travel safely without having to enter the roadway to go around parked vehicles.

Community Training and School Safety

Last week, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office sponsored mass-casualty training at the Lake County Fairgrounds. Five of our officers attended as observers, controllers, or participants. Police and fire departments from throughout Lake County practiced their responses to active-shooter scenarios. We appreciate the Sheriff’s Office for organizing this important training.

In addition, Perry Schools conducted several lockdown drills, and our officers assisted school officials. The students and staff performed extremely well throughout the drills.

Online Safety

I would also like to address cybersecurity and online safety. Parents and guardians should remain aware of what children are doing on social media and which websites they are accessing.

One recent concern is the “Cat in the Hat” trend, which features videos and images—sometimes real and sometimes created using artificial intelligence—that place the character in eerie or disturbing settings.

Please speak with your children about the dangers they may encounter online. If you have concerns about something being viewed or shared online, please feel free to contact one of our officers for guidance.

Perry Pirates Football

Finally, congratulations to our Perry Pirates football team on its 31–10 victory over Kirtland! The Pirates capitalized on two turnovers to defeat the Hornets.

This week, the team travels to Jefferson. Good luck, Pirates! 🏴‍☠️🏈 Next week, we look forward to the Homecoming parade and the game against Hawken.

Sometimes, being in the right place at the right time can make all the difference.

As law enforcement officers, we are often called upon to respond when situations are difficult or uncertain. But sometimes, the most meaningful moments happen during the routine parts of our day.

Officer Malcolm Battiato recently found himself in one of those moments while going about his daily routine. His presence and willingness to step in and assist a student helped de-escalate the situation and, most importantly, contributed to a positive outcome.

As Chief, I am proud of Officer Battiato and the way he represented our department. It is a reminder that policing is about much more than responding to calls. It is about building relationships, recognizing when someone needs help, and making a difference in the lives of the people we serve.

Thank you, Officer Battiato, for demonstrating the compassion, patience, and professionalism that we strive for every day.

The Perry Village Police Department would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for allowing our officers to utilize their gun range for training.

The Perry Village Police Department handled 81 calls for service last week. Officers conducted 11 traffic stops, resulting in six citations. I am also pleased to report that no parking violations were noted.

Over the weekend, one of our night-shift officers assisted the Madison Township Police Department with an assault call.

One officer attended two days of specialized training, and all officers completed their annual fi****ms qualifications. The qualifications required officers to demonstrate proficiency and accuracy with their duty handguns, shotguns, patrol rifles, and off-duty fi****ms.

Congratulations to Officer John “Jake” Jacobson for earning this year’s Top Gun recognition. All our officers performed well, but Officer Jacobson achieved the highest overall performance across multiple firearm platforms, including his off-duty fi****ms. Great job, Jake!

School Resource Officer Malcolm Battiato has prepared a PowerPoint presentation regarding the laws governing electric bicycles. Please watch for information about an upcoming meeting where this important presentation will be shared with parents.

Finally, I want to wish our Perry Pirates varsity football team the best of luck as they take on Kirtland this Friday! A boosters’ tailgate will be held before the game, and I look forward to seeing our residents come out and support the team.

🚔 FROM THE CHIEF’S DESK 🚔

What a great week we had as our students returned to school! During the past week, the Perry Village Police Department handled 69 calls for service. Officers conducted six traffic stops, resulting in two citations.

One traffic crash occurred in a school parking lot involving four vehicles. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Please use caution and remain attentive while driving through school parking lots to help prevent collisions.

Our officers also joined the community at Thursday evening’s bonfire. We enjoyed the opportunity to speak with so many students, families, and community members.

As I mentioned last week, Village Council approved the purchase of four automated external defibrillators (AEDs), which will be placed in our patrol vehicles. All of our officers are trained in first aid, CPR, and the administration of Narcan. We are scheduling refresher training with the Perry Joint Fire District, which will include the proper use of AEDs and Narcan.

We have now completed the first week of school. Each day, officers were present to greet our students and monitor traffic. Officers also conducted enforcement details for violations involving school buses loading and unloading students. Thankfully, no violations were observed last week.

As I have stated before, the safety of our students remains a priority for the Perry Village Police Department. We will continue strict enforcement of school-related traffic violations.

I would like to close with a reminder regarding electric bicycles. Anyone operating an electric bicycle on a roadway must follow the same traffic laws as other vehicles. This includes stopping at stop signs and yielding to other traffic when required. I have attached a flyer outlining several important e-bike safety rules.

Please also remember that electric and motorized minibikes without functioning foot pedals are not permitted on public roadways. These vehicles are designed and approved for off-road use only.
