NARA facilities across the country have been working to digitize the US Coast Guard log books in our holdings. The first batch from Riverside, from the cutter USCGC Glacier, will soon be live in the catalog at this link: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/6066089.

Digitization technology gets better by the day, and we’re constantly working to make records available online through the National Archives Catalog. We’re currently re-imaging the landmark school segregation case Mendez v. Westminster, Civil Case 4292 from the Central District of California.

This case was digitized years ago, and with our new equipment we are able to make clearer, higher resolution images available to the public. New images coming soon! https://catalog.archives.gov/id/294939

While answering reference requests, one of our archivists came upon a few photos of the F/A-18 High Altitude Research Vehicle (HARV) that was used by NASA for a flight research project that lasted from April 1987 to September 1996. The aircraft completed 385 research flights and demonstrated stabilized flight at angles of attack between 65 and 70 degrees. Flight research with the HARV increased our understanding of flight at high angles of attack, enabling designers of U.S. fighter aircraft to design airplanes that will fly safely in portions of the flight envelope that pilots previously had to avoid.

More materials from the unprocessed Southern Navajo Agency records are currently being added to the existing series Central Classified Files created by the Gallup Area Office, Navajo Agency. Here is the list of 29 Navajo Code talkers as well as an article taken from the Marine Corps 'Chevron' newspaper. During the battle for Iwo Jima, six Code Talkers successfully transmitted more than 800 messages. Be on the lookout for more gems like these as the records are processed.

Once upon a time, the National Archives at Riverside decided to celebrate Storytelling Week! Storytelling Week begins today and honors the art of storytelling and the impact it has on developing emotions, language, and creativity, especially in children. Storytelling can be done in a classroom setting like in our photo from Record Group 75, or in a less structured environment like sharing stories across generations between grandparents and grandchildren. We use stories to teach, engage, inspire, and communicate. Stories forge connections and pass on cultural traditions and morals. Do you have a favorite story?

Are You Ready For The Super Bowl?!

As we approach the most viewed event in American sports, we search our holdings for references to Super Bowl History. In the February 2, 1996 edition of the San Diego Naval Training Center’s “The Compass” we found just that. This page contains the box score for Super Bowl ### when the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17. Also included is the history (at that time) of every teams’ Super Bowl record, game MVPs and final scores of Super Bowls I through ###. We hope you enjoy this bit of Super Bowl history leading up to the big game!

Series: The Compass, 1994-1996. Record Group 181: Record Group 181: Records of Navy Installations Command, Navy Regions, Naval Districts, and Shore Establishments (NAID 7419020). https://catalog.archives.gov/id/7419020
