BREAKING🚨 ICE just confirmed for the first time that the Trump administration force-fed a hunger striker in immigrant detention. It's a practice international human rights groups classify as torture.
ICE's own Health Service Corps confirmed it in a document release: an unnamed patient who began refusing food between October and December of last year was subjected to force-feeding.
Force-feeding means a tube shoved through the nostril and down the throat, held in place while the person struggles. Done under restraint, it can cause serious infection or perforate an organ. The American Medical Association opposes it. The United Nations and the World Medical Association call it torture.
The same document shows at least seven people were on hunger strike as of February 11. ICE forecast a budget of $168,928 for the outside medical care of hunger strikers this fiscal year.
This summer, hundreds of people across the country stopped eating. At least 300 detainees at Delaney Hall in New Jersey launched a hunger and labor strike from May to June, and advocates say they ended it only after facing retaliation. At Adelanto in California, attorneys say strikers were zip-tied, threatened with tear gas, and thrown in solitary or transferred to other facilities.
Throughout, DHS has denied there were hunger strikes at all. "All detainees are provided with three meals a day," the agency said, refusing to answer whether it has force-fed anyone else since February. Border czar Tom Homan said in May the administration would "get a court order and force-feed them."
