Opening in July 2025, the Multicultural Dual Language Academy is a dedicated space for fostering bilingualism, biliteracy, and multicultural awareness among students in grades Pre-K through 4th grade. This new school merges the established two-way dual language programs from Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center and Whittier Primary School, providing room for expansion and broader access
to dual language education within the Peoria Public School district. The academy’s innovative two-way dual language model brings together students with primary languages of Spanish and English in a 50/50 balance, offering a rich and collaborative learning environment. For the 2025-2026 school year, the school will serve Kindergarten through 4th grade, with plans to phase in Pre-K and additional grade levels in subsequent years. Under the leadership of Principal Sonia Culbertson, the academy will operate on a modified calendar with flexible seating, modernized technology, and a curriculum aligned with district standards. Students will also benefit from transportation services, a robust lunch program, and access to outdoor activities, including plans to design a new playground in the future. The Multicultural Dual Language Academy is committed to inclusivity and excellence, welcoming students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and ensuring certified, licensed teachers in all classrooms. With its focus on cultural exchange and academic achievement, the academy will prepare students to thrive in an increasingly globalized world.
