Join us IN SEPTEMBER for an interesting discussion about ALEXITHYMIA!
Many autistic and neurodivergent people experience alexithymia or struggles with emotions. Alexithymia is a neurological divergence that makes it difficult to define and express one’s emotions. To be clear, autistic people have emotions. However, they often have difficulty reading emotions expressed outwardly by others, are unclear what emotions they are experiencing themselves, and endure a ‘fogginess’ in bodily (interoception) and mental signals manifested by their emotions. Emotions are present but nebulous. NDs describe emotions as difficult to define and process. Learning to recognize emotions takes practice, effort, and time, and can be overwhelming and exhausting.
We will discuss alexithymia and try out some strategies to navigate emotional states and feelings by focusing on body sensations and learning about the link with human NEEDS, such as safety or autonomy.
