Today, we celebrate Juneteenth and honor the strength, resilience, and history of Black communities.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom and justice are ongoing fights. Harm reduction is part of that work. At its core, harm reduction is about treating people with dignity, reducing stigma, and making sure everyone has access to the care and support they deserve.

As we celebrate Black liberation, we also recognize the importance of building healthier, safer communities and continuing to fight for equity for all.

Happy Freedom Day 💙🤍❤️

Join Joey for a day as a peer recovery navigator! Every day is different... but a good day starts with a white chocolate iced coffee with whipped cream.

Today Joey gave an online presentation to neighbors in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He was told that his heartfelt storytelling touched many! He continued the day with plenty of 1x1 connections with participants, hanging out in the waiting room to help someone with their housing goals, doing an HIV test and connecting people to the OSF Faith Community nursing team.

"My favorite part of the day was to be able to link participants with the doctors today, because they are non-judgmental and sympathetic!"

Nothing about us without us* Pt 2

With the IL Harm Reduction & Recovery Coalition, our Director of Operations Trudy Schaffner has been advocating against policies that harm people who use drugs and working on these two pieces of legislation:

❤ The Hope Act, supported by Representative Lindsey LaPointe. This will be a comprehensive harm reduction bill, including things like housing-first principle in recovery homes and access to medication assisted recovery in jails and prisons.

❤ The Overdose Prevention Bill, sponsored by Representative La Shawn Ford. This bill supports overdose prevention centers, which we know reduce overdose deaths and help connect people to needed services like healthcare, treatment and housing.

Legislation that ensures harm reduction access for people who use drugs is essential to our landscape view of recovery! Harm reduction IS recovery and we know it can be an on-ramp for many people's long-term recovery path of their choosing.

Trudy reminds us, "Harm reduction started as mutual aid. We know that it's people who use drugs who help other people who use drugs. That's how the work began and that is how it will continue with or without government support. We're lucky in Illinois that we have lawmakers like Ford and like LaPointe who are interested in making sure that they are still supporting the work that we do, even if the federal government doesn't."

❤We will continue to do the work of harm reduction.
❤We are grateful for the advocacy of IL Harm Reduction & Recovery Coalition!
❤We thank Representative Ford and Representative LaPointe for their work with the coalition.

"Nothing about us without us."* Pt. 1

Our Director of Operations Trudy Schaffner has been doing advocacy work with Illinois Harm Reduction & Recovery Coalition. Their slogan* is personal and political: harm reductionists will be involved when it comes to policy affecting people who use drugs!

Recovery happens in a wide landscape including policy, and we know that our federal government is not supportive of harm reduction including measures like medication assisted recovery and overdose prevention centers. So how does this fit in a landscape view of recovery?

"All of those things are shown to move people towards recovery in the general sense and those are all things that the federal government doesn't want to support because they think it enables drug use, but those things just enable survival," Trudy shared,

"What the federal government is doing is not person-centered. It's not evidence-based. We know that harm reduction works. We know that people need multiple paths to recovery. We know that people need to be met where they're at."

❤We know that harm reduction works.
❤We are proud to enable survival.
❤Survival means the chance to make any positive change.
❤And that's what we want our recovery landscape to enable!

🏳️‍🌈 HAPPY PRIDE MONTH FROM JOLT FOUNDATION!!! 🏳️‍⚧️

Pride began as a movement for liberation, led by LGBTQ+ people who fought back against stigma, discrimination, and systems that denied them dignity and autonomy. Today, that fight continues.

At JOLT Foundation, we know that harm reduction and LGBTQ+ liberation are deeply connected. Both are rooted in the belief that every person deserves respect, compassion, bodily autonomy, and access to the resources they need to survive and thrive.

LGBTQ+ people continue to face barriers to healthcare, housing, mental health services, and substance use support. Harm reduction meets people where they are, without judgment, and recognizes that every life has value.

This Pride Month, we celebrate the resilience, strength, and joy of LGBTQ+ communities while recommitting ourselves to creating safer, healthier, and more inclusive spaces for all.

No matter who you are, who you love, or where you are on your journey—you deserve care, dignity, and support.

Happy Pride Month!!!! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
