Our Story
The Peoria Heights Fire Department was originally chartered in 1917 to provide fire suppression services for the village. Over the years, the fire department has grown to now provide fire suppression response, fire prevention education, technical rescue response (vehicle accidents, elevator rescues), and emergency medical services to all citizens within the Village of Peoria Heights. The department runs approximately 850 calls per year, which on average equates to approximately 2.3 calls per day.
Our department consists of two fire stations (one above and one below Forest Park Hill, for those familiar with the area) that are staffed by trained volunteer personnel. The difference between our volunteer staffing versus the staffing of most career departments is that firefighters are not at the fire station 24 hours a day, but rather respond from their private residence to the fire station when emergencies occur. It takes a large amount of dedicated personnel to answer those calls, and we are continually recruiting new members in order to ensure that we have the staffing available to best protect the village.
The Peoria Heights Fire Department is rated as a “Class 4” agency by the Insurance Services Office, or ISO for short. ISO rates the fire suppression and fire prevention capabilities of communities against the recommendations of standards organizations like the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the American Water Works Association (AWWA), and the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International. Based upon these standards, fire departments and fire protection districts are provided a rating that can (and usually does) directly correlate to the homeowners insurance rates or business property/casualty insurance offered in an area. These ratings range from Class 10 to Class 1, with Class 1 being the highest rating available. More information regarding ISO ratings can be found here.
