Meet McGuire, a permanent resident Barred Owl and star foster parent!

McGuire had a tough go, a hit by car victim in 2001 who hit a second windshield before falling to the road. Luckily, he was brought into our hospital. He had suffered head trauma and two broken wings. His wings healed well, but his head trauma made him a permanent resident.

McGuire can often be seen on our education trail, sleepily resting on his favorite perch against the wall. When he isn’t enjoying the day in peace, he’s happily raising juvenile Barred Owls.

When baby Barred Owls arrive at our hospital, we place them in their nest box. When the baby peeps, McGuire hurries over to care for them. He then peeps for his roommate, Ally, who is always quick to co-parent. They’ve helped many babies get back to the wild.

It’s the day we’ve all been waiting for! Thanks so much for following our raccoon videos this summer. Yesterday, we released our two largest groups back to the wild! We still have more in our care that are a bit younger, but, to our staff, this feels like a checkpoint on the summer. Raccoons are incredible animals. They’re very smart, highly social, and incredibly curious. Some of our staff liken their behavior to a mix between a dog, cat, and primate. They are a ton of work to care for because of the way they solve problems, but our staff do an incredible job. Big shoutout to our team today and a good luck send off to our patients! May they do incredibly well and never see our hospital walls again.

These Chimney Swift patients are never afraid to tell you how they feel. These are two juvenile patients. The back patient is fully feathered, while the front patient has its final pin feathers growing in on its face. These pin feathers grow in with a protective casing around them, which will fall or be groomed off to reveal soft feathers inside. These birds have an important job in the ecosystem. Do you know what their favorite snack is?

These patients have grown up so fast and they’re nearly ready to head back to the wild! At this point, determining if they’re ready for release comes down more to behavior than anything else. They’re at a great size and health for release. We now want to make sure that they’re set-up for success in daily life. That means seeing that they’re capable of doing all of the physical tasks a wild raccoon needs for survival and showing fear of humans. When all of this occurs, to the wild they go!

If you have visited our sanctuary lately, you can’t miss the yelling that’s happening on our education trail. That’s coming from our Harris’s Hawks, Sterling and Bella!

These two are the only non-native permanent residents that you’ll see at our sanctuary.

Sterling was owned as a pet by a falconer and surrendered due to permit issues. She joined our family and has been slowly introduced to Bella, a fellow Harris’s Hawk.

Sterling can be recognized by her permanent jesses, a piece of leather around her foot, comparable to a collar on dog. These are great for birds who are frequently held on glove by handlers.

Sterling has a sweet demeanor, something that Bella is determined to corrupt with her pure sass. 😂 These two have been recently placed in one enclosure together and are learning social skills.

In falconry, relationships with handlers are prioritized. However, in the wild, Harris’s Hawks are highly social birds, living in large groups and hunting in packs like wolves. Bella and Sterling are getting the opportunity to learn the complexities of social coexistence and are doing a great job navigating that together.
