For what feels like my whole life, I have been an advocate for people living with EB. Bottom line and bluntly, it is horrific, but...the people behind the bandages are beyond beautiful.
Many things happened over the course of my advocacy where I seemed to lose faith in people. I always said just because someone has a special need does not make them a nice person. I saw people become selfish and far too many people who seemed to care, we're only it it for themselves. I lost faith in research for a cure (still believe in research, but don't dangle the "CURE" promise to make money and I truly believe as long as $$$ is to be made, there may never be a cure, which is heartbreaking. Don't even get me started on our healthcare industry which is corrupt beyond words. I may have lost some faith in humankind, but I never lost the passion and the desire to help make a difference in the lives of some of the most courageous, brave and resilient people on this planet. My heart may have been bruised, but it will never stop caring or rooting for the people behind the faces of EB. They ALL deserve our attention
