Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!
Why is it important to firefighters? The connection between St. Patrick’s Day and the firefighting profession is deeply rooted in the history of Irish immigration to the United States during the mid-19th century. Following the Great Potato Famine in the 1840s, millions of Irish immigrants arrived in America. Due to widespread discrimination (often signaled by "NINA" or "No Irish Need Apply" signs), they were frequently barred from many jobs.
Irish immigrants turned to low-paying, high-risk civil service roles that others avoided, specifically firefighting and law enforcement. These early "fire watch" roles were transformed by Irish immigrants into the organized, professional departments seen today.

South Madison Fire continues its growth.

Since January 1st, SMFT has added significantly to its membership. With the territory expansion, came a need for more staffing, and we have added 8 firefighters who lateral transferred from other departments, 7 civilian paramedics, and we now have 15 new hires going through a fire academy. This allows us to staff a total of 4 stations, all with 24/7 firefighting and Advanced Life Support capabilities.

Another great announcement from South Madison Fire Territory

Today is a very exciting day for Station 83’s A shift!

We’re proud to announce that a brand new Engine 83 is now officially in service in Markleville/Adams Township and will be serving as the first due engine out of Station 83.

This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of our community members, as well as our board members and the boards they represent. Your commitment, trust, and continued investment in public safety have made this a reality, and we are truly grateful.

Thank you for standing behind us and helping ensure we have the resources needed to serve and protect the South Madison community.

The start of 2026 marks the beginning of a new chapter for South Madison Fire Territory. As of 7 am today, our merger became official, and we began operations at both the Lapel Stony Creek and Adams Markleville stations. These stations will be redesignated as SMFT Station 83 (Markleville) and Station 84 (Lapel). This date also marks the career start for 15 new members, helping to fulfill staffing requirements at all four stations. An additional 15 members will soon begin training and will be placed on shift in a few months. These are unprecedented times for our department, distinguished by remarkable growth and expansion of our capabilities. We pledge to the citizens of all of the South Madison Fire Territory service area, to consistently provide the highest caliber Fire and EMS services possible, while honoring the legacy of those who came before us.

Today, we’re especially grateful for the incredible community we serve. While our crews remain on duty to keep our town safe, we were blessed with an unexpected act of kindness that truly made our holiday brighter.

Over the last 3 days South Madison Firefighters have participated in a joint training with Fishers Firefighters, concentrating on trench rescue operations. This training has improved our proficiency with the equipment available. By engaging in joint training exercises, we can enhance our response capabilities, ensuring optimal rescue outcomes in critical situations.
