I realized the other day that we haven't posted about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio in awhile. I was reminded of this by the fact that longtime library supporter Ray Kohlenberg requested that his memorial contributions were to be given to the Pemberville Library's Imagination Library fund.
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio provides monthly free books to children under age five. When you sign up your newborn, they will receive a new book every month until age five. What a gift! But wait...there's more.
According to a 2019 study at The Ohio State University, young children whose parents read them five books a day enter kindergarten having heard about 1.4 million more words than kids who were never read to. Even kids who are read only one book a day will hear about 290,000 more words by age 5 than those who don’t regularly read books with a parent or caregiver.
Beyond a greatly expanded vocabulary, a child who is read to associates reading with comfort, attention, and the joy of learning. Children who grow up with books in the home and are read to are much more likely to be successful learners at school.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library of Ohio is free to families who sign up. However, it is not free. The Pemberville Library does have to pay our share for those books to come to your children. So thank you Ray for helping to put books into the hands of the young children of Eastwood district.
We ALL benefit from this gift!
