High School Fire Science Program
This program provides rising high school seniors an opportunity to immerse in an exciting and rewarding career field, the fire service. Students are trained to the State standards of a certified volunteer fire fighter. This training encompasses all the requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the Alabama Firefighter’s Personne

l Standards and Education Commission. The training is provided in cooperation with the Alabama Fire College and is accredited by the Pro Board Fire Service Professional Qualifications System and the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress. Upon completion of this in depth training, students are certified as a Volunteer Firefighter, as well as complete an Emergency Care Provider Course (ECP) and learn valuable first response emergency medical care.. This makes our students eligible to enter a “Bridge” Recruit School to earn their career Firefighter I/II certification in five additional weeks of hands on training, which allows the student to immediately enter the workforce as a fully certified career firefighter. The Program is divided up into four main blocks as well as the ECP course which are detailed below:
BLOCK I- Orientation and fire service, fire department communications, NIMS, fire behavior, fire fighter safety and health, personal protective equipment, SCBA, portable fire extinguishers, water supply, fire hose, fire streams. BLOCK II- Fire and life safety initiatives, building construction, ground ladders, ropes, webbing, and knots, structural search and victim removal. BLOCK III- Forcible entry, tactical ventilation, fire control, loss control, fire origin and cause determination, fire fighter survival. BLOCK IV- Hazardous materials awareness and operations. This course meets the requirements of the mandatory Awareness/Operational training in hazardous materials required by Title III - Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 and NFPA 472, Standard on Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents. ECP- This course is geared toward learning advanced first-aid techniques and CPR Certification. Emergency Care Provider goes beyond simple bleeding control, and bandaging minor wounds. The course is an introduction to the roles, responsibilities, and functions of an ECP, overview of anatomy, shock, splinting, head and spinal injuries, chest injuries, heart attack and stroke, burns, pediatric emergencies, and childbirth.
