3:45 UPDATE: HWY 78 IS NOW OPEN!

We sent out an evacuation notice for anyone within 2000 feet of the area of an 18-wheeler overturned at Hwy 78 and Truss Ferry Road in Pell City, AL. The system was only supposed to alert people within 2000 feet of the area. However, we have become aware that the message went to many more people than it was intended for unknown reasons. We apologize for any inconvenience or undo concern this may have caused for those who were not intended to receive the message. We are working to determine why this happened. We have attached a map clip of the intended evacuation area for reference.

St. Clair County Adds New Emergency Decontamination Shower System to Enhance Public Safety

PELL CITY, Ala. — St. Clair County has expanded its emergency response capabilities with the acquisition of a new emergency decontamination shower system, purchased through funding provided by the Alabama Department of Public Health.

The decontamination shower system will serve all communities throughout St. Clair County and will be available for deployment during hazardous materials incidents, chemical exposures, transportation accidents, and other emergencies that require the rapid decontamination of individuals.

The Pell City Fire Department has graciously agreed to house the unit. This partnership strengthens the county's ability to provide a coordinated response to emergencies while ensuring the equipment remains maintained and deployment-ready.

"This decontamination shower system is an important addition to our county's emergency response resources," said Charity Mitcham, Deputy Director of the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency. "We are grateful to the Alabama Department of Public Health for providing the funding to purchase this equipment and to the Pell City Fire Department for their partnership in housing the unit. Together, we are improving our ability to protect residents, visitors, and first responders during hazardous incidents."

The addition of this equipment reflects the ongoing commitment of St. Clair County's emergency response agencies to strengthen preparedness, enhance interagency cooperation, and improve public safety throughout the county.

During an inspection at Pell City Fire Station No. 4 in Eden, a firefighter discovered extensive moisture damage behind a bedroom wall. This prompted an immediate walk-through by Fire Chief Jerry Dailey, who determined the building is no longer in a condition to house our firefighters.

The 27-year-old station has faced recurring moisture issues for some time. While the City has made several remediation efforts in the past, those repairs only provided temporary fixes. A closer inspection has now revealed the root cause: a major construction flaw where the building was never equipped with a proper exterior moisture barrier when it was originally built.

Because this is a comprehensive structural issue, Chief Dailey decided the facility is not currently safe for 24-hour use and has relocated the Eden crew to Station 1.

"My first priority is the health and safety of the men and women under my command,” Dailey said. “Based on what we found behind those walls, I cannot in good conscience ask them to live and work in that building one day longer."

This move will not result in a lapse in emergency services, and the City's response network remains fully operational. City leadership and Chief Dailey are working with structural experts to determine the most responsible path forward to ensure the Eden community is served by a safe, modern station for decades to come.
