March is off to a great start at PES! We had Super Bowl Champion and Children's Book Author Malcolm Mitchell share his love of reading with our students. Next we celebrated Read Across America Week with guest readers. Finally our PES Hornets took a trip to the stars without leaving Pelham with the Sky Dome Planetarium Experience!

Pelham Elementary School’s recent recognition as a Literacy Leaders Award recipient reflects the school’s prolonged, hard work, and dedication to strengthening the reading achievements of all grade levels. Beginning in 2023, PES partnered with the Rollins Center, which is a program that focuses on the development of oral language, comprehension, and foundational literacy. Through nonnegotiable instructional practices, strong phonics support, and using data collected from students, teachers refined how reading was taught in the classrooms. These efforts allowed educators to address and target decoding gaps, improve fluency, and deepen the students’ ability to gain understanding of the text.

The impact of these new tools became most visible in third grade, where students demonstrated phenomenal growth in the reading section on the Georgia Milestones assessment. Teachers created learning experiences best compatible for their kids, promoting both skill development and critical thinking. This wonderful recognition from the Georgia Department of Education highlights not only improved scores, but also the school’s broader focus on preparing confident, thoughtful readers equipped for long-term academic success.
