many brides are still children, not even teenagers. So young are some girls that they hold onto their toys during the wedding ceremony. Usually these girls become mothers in their early teens, while they are still children themselves. Some of our most treasured memories begin around a table, with family, laughter, traditions, and meals made with love.

“Sleep hungry many nights. Be in debt if you must. But do not sell your daughters.”

Those are Noor Ahmad’s words.

Years ago, he sold one of his kidneys to protect his daughters from the poverty that can push families toward child marriage.

Today, he earns a living through his work with support from Too Young to Wed. His hope remains the same:
“I want my daughters to go to school, become educated, and marry after they turn 18.”

This Father’s Day, we honor fathers like Noor Ahmad, whose greatest wish is for their daughters to grow up with the freedom to learn, choose their own futures, and marry only when they are ready.

Crossing a border should never mean leaving education behind.

For thousands of Afghan refugee girls, displacement is more than the loss of a home. It can mean interrupted schooling, uncertainty about the future, and growing risks as families are forced to return to Afghanistan.

Recent reports warn that girls returning to Afghanistan face an education system closed to them beyond sixth grade, alongside new laws that human rights experts say increase the risk of child marriage.

Education is more than a classroom. It is a pathway to opportunity, independence, and choice.

Every refugee girl deserves the chance to learn, wherever she is.

She is holding up a flashcard. She is laughing. She is in a classroom in Rajasthan, India, where only 1% of girls in rural areas reach class 12.

She is one of the ones who stayed.

In Rajasthan, girls from socially excluded communities face some of the highest dropout rates in India. When girls leave school, early marriage follows. When girls stay, everything changes. Every year a girl remains in school reduces her risk of child marriage.

Seema, 16, is one of the students in our program. “My parents did not want me to continue my studies,” she says. “But I always wanted to study more. I want to be self-reliant and do something good in my life.”

Every year, the world spends less than $1 per girl to end child marriage. The cost of doing nothing is $175 billion.

Today is the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. Child marriage is one of the most widespread forms of aggression against girls. Up to 14,000 mothers die from it every year. Up to 190,000 children under five die because of it. $1.3 billion a year could reduce child marriage by 30%. That is not a funding failure. It is a choice. At first, motherhood can seem the same everywhere. The love is the same. The worry is the same. The hope for your children is the same.

But the challenges mothers face can be very different.

Bibi Mina is a mother of five living in Afghanistan. After losing her husband, she was left with few ways to support her family. As opportunities for women became increasingly restricted, she spun wool at home while her sons collected plastic from the streets to sell.

Some days, the family had enough to eat. Other days, they went hungry if no help was available.

Through our Parwana Program, Bibi Mina received emergency food assistance and vocational training. Today, she is working to build a more stable future for her children.

When families have support, girls have a better chance to stay safe, continue their education, and shape their own futures.

For many girls around the world, the countdown stops here. Not because childhood ended naturally. Because someone decided it was time.

Child marriage is not a distant problem. It is happening now, in countries where girls are married before they finish primary school, and in the United States, where child marriage is still legal in 34 states.

640 million women alive today were married as children. 200 million of them before age 15. Each one had an age where her story should have gone differently. Where she should have been allowed to just be a child a little longer.
