The Frio County Sheriff’s Office is aware of a disturbing online trend circulating across platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram, commonly referred to as the “Cat in the Hat” trend.
This viral trend involves edited, images or videos depicting a menacing version of the character lurking in local communities, neighborhoods, or near school grounds. In several instances nationwide, anonymous accounts have attached lists of student names, schools, or towns to these videos to provoke fear.
Current Status & Safety Assessment
Our law enforcement partners have investigated the posts referencing our area. At this time, there does not appear to be a credible threat to our students, staff, or campuses.
Out of an abundance of caution, we have increased law enforcement visibility and patrols around the areas. The safety of our community remains our absolute highest priority.
A Serious Warning Regarding "Pranks" and Copycats
We want to be entirely clear: participating in, re-creating, or spreading these threatening posts is not a harmless joke.
* Legal Consequences: Creating a copycat account or forwarding threats—even as a prank—can result in immediate criminal charges, including cyberbullying, harassment, and terroristic threats.
We ask parents to speak with their children about this trend and monitor their online activity. If a student encounters a concerning or threatening post online, we ask them to follow these steps:
1. Do NOT repost, share, or tag friends. Spreading the video online increases the panic and complicates police investigations.
2. Take a screenshot. Preserve the evidence, including the account username.
3. Report it immediately. Share the information directly with school administrators, or submit a tip directly to our office at 830-505-7153.

We appreciate the swift action of the community members who brought this to our attention. We will continue to monitor vigilantly to our youth and schools remain safe, calm, and focused on learning.
