PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii — Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Pearl Harbor will host a graduation ceremony for its second cohort of the homegrown leadership seminar, Legacy: A New Dawn of Leadership Development, reinforcing the command’s commitment to cultivating future civilian and military leaders.
Legacy is a dynamic leadership development program designed to immerse participants in specialized experiences that foster both personal and professional growth. Through classroom discussions, collaborative group work, homework assignments and guided instruction, participants refined their oral and written communication abilities while strengthening presentation and public speaking skills essential for effective leadership.
The six-month program also emphasized professional awareness and relationship-building across the workforce. Team-building activities encouraged participants to establish lasting professional connections with coworkers outside their normal day-to-day interactions, expanding networks and strengthening collaboration throughout the command.
Participants of Legacy challenged themselves both mentally and professionally while participating in the latest iteration of the command’s leadership initiative. Participants, who were self-nominated with endorsement from their supervisors, completed classroom instruction alongside reading assignments and practical leadership exercises intended to promote a sustained leadership mindset throughout the organization.
During the first session of each Legacy season, participants are asked to identify topics and skills they hope to develop throughout the course. While both iterations of the program focused on public speaking and self-awareness, this year’s cohort placed a stronger emphasis on emotional intelligence and self-reflection.
“The first Legacy class placed a heavy emphasis on public speaking, including baseline speaking assessments, instruction from a public affairs subject matter expert, and multiple opportunities to practice speaking throughout the course,” said Austin Jo, Legacy facilitator. “This year’s class focused more heavily on self-awareness, encouraging participants to look inward and pay attention to emotional triggers and reactions.”
One of the program’s most impactful assignments asked participants to share inspirational quotes that resonated personally with them. The exercise encouraged self-reflection while helping classmates gain a deeper understanding of one another and strengthen professional relationships.
“My favorite assignment from this year’s class was Favorite Quotes,” said Jo. “The purpose of the exercise was to inspire and motivate participants, share perspectives, and better understand one another through the quotes they connected with.”
Program facilitators said the ultimate goal of Legacy is to help leaders develop emotional regulation and stronger interpersonal relationships that directly influence leadership effectiveness across the workforce.
“I hope the graduates from this class learned about themselves, identified areas where they felt uncomfortable or triggered, and cultivated emotional regulation,” said Jo. “When leaders understand their own personal triggers and discomfort, they can pause and choose a logical and strategic response rather than an emotional reaction. This builds psychological safety and strengthens relationships, which ultimately enhances how we lead ourselves and others.”
Command leadership recognized the graduates’ dedication to professional development and their commitment to applying newly acquired leadership skills across the workforce. The Legacy program continues to serve as an investment in the future readiness and effectiveness of the command by empowering employees to lead with confidence, communication and collaboration.
“Leadership is not about rank or status, it is about understanding people, communicating with respect, and having the courage to grow beyond your comfort zone,” said Gregory Rodriguez, Legacy participant.
