I enjoy visiting and volunteering at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, but I did not realize how much I was learning about American art until I walked through the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts this summer and recognized the styles of several artists.
Here, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s sculpture 'Making Medicine: Coyote (Going Forward, Looking Back)' stands in front of Asher B. Durand’s painting 'Progress (The Advance of Civilization)'.
The artists’ names may not have come to mind immediately, but their distinctive styles and themes were instantly recognizable. Apparently, I have been learning more than I realized. Visiting our lo0cal world-class museum makes visiting others all the more enjoyable.
