At approximately 1430 hours today Payson 911 was notified that a powerline was down on the Southwest side of Mesa Del Caballo and there was smoke coming from the area. An Engine was dispatched to investigate. When the engine arrived they found about 1/2 acre of brush on fire and requested a full First Alarm and the Tonto National Forest to respond to assist. The First alarm brought more units from Payson as well as Water Wheel Fire and Medical and Hellsgate Fire Department to the scene. An aggressive attack was used to limit the fire spread to 3/4 of an acre.
The fire is under investigation by the Tonto, although it is believed the powerline is the most likely cause and the Tonto crews will remain on scene for awhile longer to ensure the fire is out.
This is a great example of fuels mitigation work done by the Tonto National Forest in the area and a strong cooperative fire force to limit the spread of the fire.

🚒 Training Never Stops at Payson Fire Department! 🚒

Our B Shift kicked off ladder truck training yesterday at Station 11 and continues today at Station 13 as our crews continue building the knowledge and skills needed to safely and effectively operate our new-to-us ladder truck.

A special thank you goes out to Paul Liddell (Mesa Fire & Medical Department), Tom Shaw (Chandler Fire Department), Tristan Westmoreland (Mesa Fire & Medical Department), and Matt Rush (Tempe Fire Medical Rescue) for taking time out of their busy schedules to travel to Payson and share their expertise with our firefighters.

🚑❤️40 Years of Paramedic Service to Payson❤️🚒

This year marks an incredible milestone in the history of the Town of Payson Fire Department.

On July 1, 1986, the Payson Fire Department officially began providing paramedic services to our community, forever changing the level of emergency medical care available to the citizens of Payson.

Our very first firefighter/paramedics were Marty deMasi and Mark Mouritsen. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving others helped lay the foundation for the exceptional emergency medical services our department provides today.

Marty deMasi would later go on to serve as Fire Chief for the Payson Fire Department, while Mark Mouritsen continued his career in medicine, serving as a physician in Payson for many years and caring for patients in emergency departments throughout Arizona.

Over the past four decades, our department has continued to grow and evolve. Today, multiple firefighter/paramedics staff each of our frontline apparatus, providing advanced life support to our community 24 hours a day. We are equally proud that many of our firefighters continue their education by attending paramedic school, ensuring the next generation is prepared to carry on this tradition of excellence.

As we celebrate 40 years of paramedic service, we honor those who came before us, thank those who serve today, and look forward to continuing our commitment to providing the highest level of emergency medical care to the Payson community for many years to come.

Here’s to 40 years of caring for our neighbors—and to the generations of firefighter/paramedics who have answered the call with skill, compassion, and dedication. ❤️🚒🚑🩺⏱️🎉
