It takes a little patience, a lot of communication and some serious teamwork to find your way through a maze (especially when everyone has a hand in it -- literally)!
Seventh graders science students in Ms. Iacovelli's class kicked off their first STEAM Lab today with a challenge designed to get them talking, thinking and working together. Students broke into teams and used strings to control a marker as they navigated their way through mazes of varying difficulty. They quickly discovered that getting from start to finish wasn’t something anyone could do alone; they had to listen to one another, make a plan, adjust when something wasn’t working and find a way forward together -- and that was exactly the point.
The activity gave students a fun introduction to the skills they’ll rely on throughout their STEAM projects this quarter: collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. Classes spent time afterward reflecting on what helped their teams succeed and how those same strategies will come into play as they tackle the projects ahead.
If the first challenge is any indication, there is plenty of creative thinking and problem solving ahead for our seventh grade science students. Kudos to Ms. Iacovelli on coming up with such a creative way to kick off the STEAM Lab fun! 🐯
