Bush bailed out of his burning TBM Avenger over the Pacific after anti-aircraft fire tore through his squadron’s attack on a heavily defended Japanese radio station. He finished his bombing run before jumping, then drifted for hours in a life raft until the submarine USS Finback surfaced and pulled him aboard. A lesser-known detail: Bush spent the next month on the Finback helping spot pilots in distress and even assisting with rescues—experience that forged his lifelong bond with those who serve.
