CHARLESTOWN – A 71-year-old man died this morning while trimming a tree on his 34 Deer Run property.
The man, identified as Czeslaw Swizcz, was discovered unresponsive and apparently trapped in the tree at about 11:30 a.m. It appears, according to Charlestown police, a large limb fell on him as he was trimming the tree with a saw about 25-feet off the ground.
Charlestown police and emergency personnel, as well as members of the Dunn’s Corners Fire Department responded to the home where they found Swizcz “trapped between the branches of a large oak tree” where a large broken branch fell on him. Police it appeared that he had been trapped “for some time.” He was pronounced dead on the scene and the Rhode Island state medical office was contacted, said Lt. Michael Paliotta.

WESTERLY — Power is out in a section of downtown this morning after a tractor-trailer truck making a delivery to the Bridge Restaurant on Main Street struck wires and pulled down a utility pole in the parking lot.

The pole fell on top of the cab of the truck, trapping the driver inside, but he was not injured, according to first responders at the scene. Traffic was backing up for some time as one lane of Main Street was closed as utility workers and firefighters worked at the scene. Wires covered the truck and the driver remained inside the cab as crews from the Westerly Fire Department and National Grid arrived on the scene at a little after 8 a.m.

Fire officials were initially concerned that the wires could be live and that other poles could also be pulled down. Westerly Fire Chief John Mackay said the driver of the truck, from US. Foods, makes frequent deliveries to the restaurant. Traffic is moving but power remains out. The driver of the truck was eventually removed by emergency personnel at about 8:40 a.m.
