On June 1st, 1916, Paw Paw’s free city delivery service began. Leon L. Douglas was the first regular mail carrier.

Mail would only be delivered only to houses on streets with sidewalks, though residents were allowed to build mailboxes on other sides of the streets or at the end of their road to guarantee delivery.

Prior to this time, postage would only provide delivery from post office to post office. Residents would need to pick up their mail themselves, which was high inconvenient. On July 1st, 1863 Congress mandated that free city delivery be established at post offices where the income from their postage was adequate to pay for the expenses of delivery.

Discover great stories and connect with others through Listen Up, our new audiobook club designed for people with low vision. This month’s book is The Library Book by Susan Orlean. Thanks to the Michigan Braille and Talking Book Library, books will be mailed directly to participants’ homes. If you’re not signed up for their services, we can help you get started—just call the library for more information. The club meets both in person and on Zoom.

The library has a millage renewal on the ballot August 4. The last time voters approved this millage, it was 2007. You might have been driving down the road in your Toyota Camry with your sideswept bangs blowing in the breeze, blasting Irreplaceable by Beyonce as you drove to watch Spiderman 3 at the Strand! A lot has changed since 2007, but the library is still here serving the community.

Permits are still available for the Trunk Sale on Saturday, June 6. You can purchase your permit for $15.
