On September 2nd, 1901, over 8,000 residents gathered around to watch the cornerstone of the Van Buren County Courthouse be placed. Frank O. Gilbert, the grand master of the Michigan Free and Accepted Masons, laid this cornerstone and members of the Grand Army of the Republic and fraternal organizations marched through town in celebration.

Pictured below is a photo of that very cornerstone. The building was designed by architect Claire Allen (notice the misspelling on the stone). Over a year later, on February 23, 1903, the court house was dedicated.

The building remains as an important historical marker to this day.

The more parents and caregivers talk and listen to young children, the easier it is for them to learn to read and write when they start kindergarten. This is because simple activities each day such as singing and playing every day help kids develop the cognitive and language skills they need to do well in school and beyond.
TALK: Text and Learn for Kindergarten, sends two text messages each week suggesting activities that parents and caregivers can easily incorporate into daily routines with their children. Parents and caregivers of children ages 5 and under can sign up by either texting TALK to 75547 or registering online at www.textandlearn.org.
