AIRTEVRON ONE (VX-1) Air Test and Evaluation Squadron ONE (VX-1), the “Pioneers,” lead in testing and evaluating the Navy’s most advanced aviation systems.

Based at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, VX-1 ensures every aircraft, sensor, and weapon system is ready for the Fleet. Welcome to the home of the world famous Pioneers, Air Test and Evaluation Squadron ONE. We are located in beautiful Patuxent River, Maryland. Our mission here is to conduct tests, evaluations, and investigations of antisubmarine warfare aircraft systems, weapons systems, airborne s

trategic weapons system, support systems, equipment, and materials in an operational environment. Because of the squadron’s unique position as an interfacing unit between the development of new weapon systems and their subsequent introduction into the Fleet, VX-1 is considered the squadron that "does it first."

Rear Admiral Craig Mattingly, Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group, visited our facility on May 1, 2026. While here, he engaged with Sailors assigned to the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force detachment at VX-1 and completed a flight aboard one of VX-1’s P-8A Poseidons.

Sailors and industry partners participate in testing of Minotaur Mission System on board a MH-60R Seahawk helicopter. Minotaur incorporates sensors, radar, and command, control, communications, computers, cyber, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance equipment and enable aircrews to gather and process surveillance information that can be transmitted to other platforms and units during flights.
