**Outstanding Action By 911 Dispatch**

The Paterson Fire Department would like to publicly acknowledge the extraordinary actions of one of our public safety telecommunicators: Supervising PST Lenore Byfield.

Today, Supervisory PST Byfield fielded a call from a frantic woman who was in active labor. PST Byfield remained calm, professional, compassionate, and focused and was able to successfully coach the caller through an extremely critical moment. The baby was successfully delivered by the mother prior to the arrival of emergency units thanks to the actions of Supervisory PST Byfield. The baby and mother were then transported to the hospital by EMS 5, Car 9, and ALS 703 who further assisted with the remainder of the delivery process. Excellent teamwork by all responders from the start of the call all the way through to arrival at the hospital.

The actions of PST Byfield undoubtedly reassured the caller through a tough situation and exemplify the professionalism, dedication, and training of our communications division.

OEM Central dispatch, which falls under the purview of The Paterson Fire Department, is a critical link to keeping our residents and responders safe.

**UASI Trench Rescue Mutual Aid to East Rutherford **

Yesterday, Rescue Tour 2 was requested as part of a UASI task force to East Rutherford for a male trapped in a collapsed trench. Rescue arrived and worked as part of a team to stabilize the trench. Once stabilized and risk of secondary collapse minimized, members entered the trench and dug the entrapped party out by hand.

Strong work by tour 2 and all mutual aid on scene for stabilizing a volatile situation and getting the job done in a high risk, low frequency type of emergency. Hard work and training paying off big time.

During this afternoon’s flash flooding event, Paterson Firefighters rescued approximately 20 individuals who became trapped by rapidly rising floodwaters.

Among those rescued was a 62-year-old wheelchair-bound resident. Members of Rescue Company 2 entered the rapidly rising floodwaters to reach the individual, who was stranded in her wheelchair. Firefighters safely carried her from the moving water and transferred her to Paterson EMS for care and transport to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center.

We are grateful for the courage and professionalism displayed by our firefighters today.

⚠️ Flash Flood Safety Reminder: Never drive through flooded roadways. It only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep a vehicle away.
