School Zones Are Already Busy

While Paterson Public Schools return Tuesday, charter schools are already back in session, and that means school drop-off traffic is already here.

In this video, an officer stops a driver who made a left turn from a lane designated for right turns only, directly outside a school during drop-off.

A few extra seconds on the road can make a big difference when students, parents, school staff and crossing pedestrians are all sharing the same space.

Slow down. Follow posted signs and lane markings. Stay alert around schools.

School is back. Let’s start the year by getting everyone there safely.

In the month of August, Officers Pagan and Dakake conducted a motor vehicle stop that resulted in two fi****ms being discovered in the car and on one of the occupants. Four individuals were then taken into custody. Because of their vigilance and proactive policing, two fi****ms were taken off our streets, preventing future tragedies. For their efforts they have been named the August 2026 Officers of the Month.

Two of our newest officers are currently in the Field Training Unit where they are learning valuable skills as they begin their law enforcement careers.

Both have ties to Paterson and are great additions to this police force.

Back to school means more vehicles, pedestrians and activity around our schools during drop-off and pick-up.

Help keep everyone safe:

• Follow posted signs and traffic directions.
• Don’t double park or block intersections.
• Pull safely to the curb when dropping off or picking up.
• Never block a crosswalk.
• Avoid sudden stops, U-turns and other unsafe maneuvers.
• Give yourself a few extra minutes and be patient.

A few extra seconds can make a difference. Slow down, stay alert and look out for one another.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU.

As students head back to school, we’re reminding every driver to slow down, stay alert and respect school buses.

When a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended:

• STOP and remain stopped.
• DO NOT pass the bus.
• WATCH for children entering or exiting the bus and crossing the roadway.
• Give yourself extra time and space in school zones and residential areas.

A few seconds saved by passing a stopped school bus can have consequences that last a lifetime.

Slow down. Stay alert. Stop for the bus.

In today’s Civilian Spotlight, we’re highlighting the hardworking mechanics of the Paterson Police Department Motorpool.

They keep our fleet of nearly 200 vehicles safe, serviced and ready to go every day, helping ensure our officers can answer calls for service and keep our community safe.

Their work happens behind the scenes, but it keeps the entire department moving.

Rain is moving through Paterson this morning, and more is expected throughout the day.

A Flood Watch is in effect for Paterson from noon through 11 PM as heavy rain and thunderstorms could bring localized flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

If you’re on the road, slow down, allow extra travel time and never drive through a flooded roadway.
