June 7, 1949 – On this date, the Cleveland Indians defeated the Washington Senators by a score of 13-11 at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium. Larry Doby went 2 for 4, with two home runs, four runs batted in and three runs scored.

The game was mired in controversy, Doby’s second home run came off of relief pitcher Walt Masterson in the fourth inning to tie the game at eight runs apiece. Cleveland’s second baseman Joe Gordon was the next batter. Masterson hit Gordon on the left shoulder and Gordon charged at Masterson with bat in hand.

The benches cleared, but home plate umpire John Stevens managed to keep the fracas from intensifying, until Washington catcher Al Evans got in Gordon’s face and started the melee up again. This time third base umpire Jim Honochick stepped in to restore order.

The tension also caused the crowd to feel agitated. In the sixth inning, Doby smoked a line drive that first base umpire Bill Grieve called foul, the home town crowd roared in displeasure. Fans were so irate that a “quart-sized beer bottle” was thrown in the umpire’s direction.

Hinchliffe Stadium Profile: Carlisle, PA

In our extensive research on Hinchliffe Stadium, not only have we discovered interesting people, but interesting places that connect to Hinchliffe Stadium. Nestled approximately three hours away from Hinchliffe Stadium, Carlisle, Pennsylvania is quaint town that offers great restaurants, breweries, and an up-and-coming entertainment scene.

Carlisle was once home to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, a boarding school for Native American's. The location of the school, like Hinchliffe Stadium, is a National Historic Landmark. Today, it is the home of the U.S. Army War College. Two prominent students from Carlisle rose to national prominence in sports: Jim Thorpe and Albert "Chief" Bender.

One of the greatest athletes of all time, Thorpe is widely known as a football player. Thorpe also played professional baseball and basketball, and was also an Olympian. Bender would become a Hall of Fame pitcher, having won three World Series titles with the Philadelphia Athletics.

At Carlisle, Bender and Thorpe would miss each other by two years as Bender graduated in 1902, while Thorpe's first year was 1904. At Hinchliffe Stadium, both men would miss each other by one day.

On July 8, 1933 Bender appeared at Hinchliffe Stadium as the manager of the House of David team that lost to the Paterson City Club by a score of 10-9. The next day, on July 9th, Thorpe played with the Oklahoma Indians baseball team and mustered a single also against the Paterson City Club.
