Welcome back to another U.S. Coast Guard history post!
Did you know that when the Revenue Cutter service was established Congress authorized 10 cutters to be built for the service on August 4, 1790. These first 10 cutters would go on to form the core of the young Revenue Cutter service as it honorably served the nation in its earliest days.

Public Affairs isn’t the only way the Auxiliary shares boating safety, but it’s one of the most visible! ⚓
Through the Auxiliary Partner Visitation program, local businesses, marinas, and offices host displays stocked with safety materials for the public to take, such as:
• PFD guides
• ECOS pamphlets
• VHF radio tips
• State & federal boating regulations
Keeping boaters informed and safe, one display at a time!

ICE SAFETY: The 1-10-1 Rule*
❄️ 1 minute to control breathing after cold water shock;
❄️ 10 minutes of meaningful movement before muscle function is lost;
❄️ 1 hour before loss of consciousness from hypothermia.
Through public education, training, and outreach, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliarists support Active Duty operations by helping share lifesaving cold-water safety knowledge—because prevention and preparedness are part of the mission. *U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary's Post

DID YOU KNOW...In 1964, the Coast Guard started receiving strange messages from concerned viewers of the television show Gilligan’s Island. They were demanding the Coast Guard mount a rescue mission for the castaways. According to Sherwood Schwartz, the show's creator, the Coast Guard forwarded the first few of those messages to the set by telegram. Eventually, a USCG commander visited Schwartz to present him with the stack of messages. (Reposted from National Coast Guard Museum Association)

It is time for some sea-going cutter history!
Commissioned in 1912, USCG Cutter Tampa (ex- Miami) would see an adventurous career, from preforming ice patrol duty in the wake of the RMS Titanic sinking, to being one of six U.S. Coast Guard cutters to be assigned to convoy duty in European waters during World War One, escorting a total of 18 merchant convoys with the loss of only two ships to enemy action. This displayed exemplary service from a small ship in such a destructive conflict. Tragically on September 26th, 1918, 130 of her passengers and crew would lose their lives when UB-91 torpedoed and sank the cutter just off the Welsh coast. The sacrifices of Tampa's crew will never be forgotten, as the U.S. Coast Guard Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery was dedicated and honors the memory of the lost passengers and crew of USCG Cutter Tampa.
