This week, my team was grateful for the opportunity to tour both the Suffolk County Police Department and the Fire Island U.S. Coast Guard facilities here on Long Island to learn more about the critical work they do every day to keep our communities safe.

From maritime security and emergency response to public safety and disaster preparedness, these organizations play an essential role in protecting Long Islanders.

Thank you to the Suffolk County Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard for taking the time to host the team and for everything they do to serve and protect Long Island families year-round.

This Memorial Day, we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives defending our country and protecting the freedoms we enjoy every day.

Across Long Island, families are carrying the loss of loved ones who never made it home. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we owe it to them to always remember the cost of our freedom.

Ahead of Memorial Day, I want to recognize Seabee veteran Ron Gibbons, who recently received the medals he earned for his service in Vietnam more than 50 years ago with help from my office.

"More than 50 years after serving in Vietnam, I was finally able to receive the medals I earned thanks to Congressman Garbarino and his office. After all these years, it meant a lot to finally have my service recognized, and I’m truly grateful for their help in making it happen. With Memorial Day approaching, I think it’s important to remember the men and women who served our country and to make sure no veteran is forgotten. I appreciate Congressman Garbarino taking the time to help me receive this long-overdue recognition,” said veteran Ron Gibbons.

Long Island is home to so many veterans who answered the call to serve our country, and making sure they receive the recognition and support they earned will always be important to me.

This week, I proudly supported the Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefits Expansion Act to strengthen support for veterans and military families.

This legislation increases support for severely disabled veterans, raises benefits for surviving spouses and families, and expands VA home loan eligibility for certain Guard and Reserve members.

Long Island is home to thousands of veterans and military families who sacrificed for our country, and they deserve a government that keeps its promises to them.

Supporting our veterans means more than just thanking them for their service. It means making sure they have access to the care and benefits they earned.

As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, I know how important it is that we address the housing affordability crisis facing Long Island and communities across the country.

This week’s House passage is an important step toward increasing housing supply, lowering costs, and making it easier for families to achieve homeownership.

The House just unanimously passed the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 Commemorative Coin Act, legislation I was proud to co-lead.

This bill authorizes commemorative coins to mark the 25th anniversary of September 11th.

The design process will include the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, and the proceeds will support the Memorial and Museum’s operations and maintenance at the World Trade Center site.

For Long Island and New York, September 11th is deeply personal, and nearly 25 years later, we still carry that loss with us.

The commemorative coin program will help preserve the stories and sacrifices of that day for future generations.

We will never forget.

Today, on Armed Forces Day, we honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who wear our nation’s uniform and defend our freedoms around the world.

To all those serving, including so many here on Long Island, thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your commitment to this country.

With service on the Long Island Railroad suspended due to the labor strike, below are some important travel resources for Long Islanders who rely on the LIRR for their daily commute.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is providing limited weekday shuttle bus service for essential workers and those unable to work remotely during peak commuting hours, with service operating from Bay Shore, Huntington, Ronkonkoma, Hempstead Lake State Park, Hicksville, and Mineola to subway connections in Queens.

Nassau County commuters may also use NICE Bus service to connect to Queens, including routes serving Jamaica, Flushing, Far Rockaway, and 179th Street.

A Long Island Rail Road strike is in effect and service is suspended. Get details on shuttle bus service, accessible travel alternatives, and more.

As we wrap up National Police Week, I want to once again thank and recognize the brave men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe.

Here on Long Island, we are especially grateful for the officers of the Suffolk County Police Department, Nassau County Police Department, our local village departments, sheriff’s deputies, state troopers, and federal law enforcement.

I will continue to stand with and support law enforcement across the country and right here on Long Island.

In Congress this week, I was proud to support and vote for the Cashless Bail Reporting Act and the Keeping Violent Offenders Off Our Streets Act, commonsense legislation the House passed to strengthen accountability, support our police, and help keep violent criminals off our streets.

I’m proud to stand with law enforcement and support the bipartisan Combating Organized Retail Crime Act.

Organized retail crime hurts families, workers, and small businesses right here on Long Island. I was proud to vote to give law enforcement the tools they need to crack down on these criminal networks and keep our communities safe.
