COMPASSION CONNECTION DIGNITY

Every day at The Women’s Room starts with one question: “What do you need?” 💚

When you’re experiencing homelessness, it’s easy to start feeling like a number. You wait in lines, fill out forms, and repeat your story from one office to the next. At The Women’s Room, Assistant Director Jenny and her team work hard to make sure that never happens here.

The women who come through our doors each have their own stories, challenges, and hopes. So instead of following a fixed script, our staff listen closely and let the women shape the space. As their needs change, the program changes with them.

Swipe through to see what that looks like day to day. âžĄïž

Stories like this land in our inbox every week, and we’d love for them to land in yours too! Sign up for Rabbi Joshua’s weekly email at the link in our bio for more stories of hope, community, and dignity from across Friends In Deed. 📬

Do you speak Mandarin?

Our Food Pantry is looking for Mandarin-speaking volunteers to help welcome and serve our neighbors on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

At Friends In Deed, our Food Pantry is set up like a neighborhood market, where neighbors choose their own groceries. Being greeted in your own language is part of that welcome. It helps our guests feel at home, ask questions comfortably, and shop with confidence and dignity.

Whether you’re fluent or conversational, your language skills and kind heart can make a real difference for the families we serve each week. đŸ„•đŸŽ

Interested? Contact Tim Nistler, Director of the Food Pantry, at [email protected]. Shift details coming soon!

Say hello to our newest Friends (In Deed)! 👋💚

We had a wonderful time at the PCC College Corps Program Launch, where we finally met our new fellows in person!

Over the coming months, these fellows will be lending their time, talents, and fresh perspectives to several of our programs as they serve our neighbors with compassion and dignity. We already know they’ll be a class act. 🎓

To our new fellows: thank you for choosing to spend your time making a difference in our community. We’re so excited to learn alongside you!

And a big thank you to Pasadena City College for building a program that connects students with meaningful service, and to every fellow who has walked through our doors before. Your energy, curiosity, and heart leave a lasting mark on Friends In Deed and the neighbors we serve.

Can you help us fill a plate? đŸœïž

Every day, 45–50 women come through the doors of The Women’s Room for a safe place to rest, connect, and share a warm meal. For many of our guests, that meal is one of the most nourishing moments of their day.

Because of rising food prices, three of the wonderful groups who provide meals for our guests have had to pause for now. We’re so grateful for everything they’ve given, and we can’t wait to welcome them back! In the meantime, we have 5 days each month to fill, and we’d love your help.

We’re looking for ready-to-serve hot meals for 45–50 guests, including a main course, side dish, salad, and fruit.

Here’s how you can help:
đŸ€ Groups: Bring your congregation, workplace, school, or friends together to provide a meal
🍎 Individuals: Order a catering-style meal for our guests
đŸ’Č Give: Make a monetary donation at the link in our bio and note “TWR Meals”

To sign up for a date, contact Jenny, Assistant Director of The Women’s Room, at [email protected].

The Women’s Room is the only organization in the San Gabriel Valley dedicated to serving women who are alone and experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Your meal tells our guests that their community sees them and cares. Thank you for helping us keep the table full! 🙏

A new freezer is up and running in our Food Pantry, thanks to the generous support of the Pasadena Community Foundation!

This important addition increases our capacity to safely store food and helps us keep up with the growing number of households turning to Friends In Deed for groceries each week. We are so grateful to PCF for investing in the infrastructure that keeps our Food Pantry running strong.

This project was funded by a grant from the Pasadena Community Foundation.

It took 11 of us, but we raised the roof! â›ș💚

Our Food Pantry got a brand-new 20x20 canopy, thanks to one of our volunteers. He already gives his time to our neighbors every week, and he chose to give even more so this space could be more comfortable and welcoming for everyone.

Watch our crew work together to get it up. It wasn’t the most graceful lift, but it was full of heart (and a few laughs). 😄

To our generous volunteer: thank you. Your kindness will shelter our Pantry community through sunny days and rainy ones for years to come. We are so grateful. 🙏

And to the 10 other pairs of hands who made it happen, thank you too! This is what we mean by

Happy ! đŸ„•đŸŽđŸ„«

This year’s theme, “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow,” got us thinking about what makes our Food Pantry a little different.

Our pantry isn’t a handout line. It’s set up like a neighborhood market, where neighbors shop for the groceries that fit their families, their cultures, and their tastes. Through food-rescue partnerships with local grocers and farmers markets, we turn food that might have gone to waste into fresh produce, protein, and pantry staples. Plus, our long-standing relationships with the LA Food Bank and other organizations ensure we have plenty of food to share.

Every week, more than 700 Pasadena and Altadena households shop with us.

So here’s some food for thought: you can help keep those shelves stocked!
🛒 Give online at the link in our bio
đŸ„« Drop off donations Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

Our GOLD items right now: canned tuna and chicken, hearty soups, peanut butter, cereal, rice, pasta and sauce, and cooking oil.

Not sure what to bring? Donate something you’d like to eat, because chances are someone else will, too!

Friends In Deed was featured in Pasadena Now this week for a leadership transition on our Board of Directors.

After a term of steady, thoughtful leadership, Bret Schaefer has passed the gavel to Leslie White, our new Board President. You may already know Leslie from the Food Pantry, where she volunteers. She’s also helped at The Women’s Room and the Bad Weather Shelter, and she brings deep experience in board development, strategic planning, and social advocacy.

We’re also excited to welcome two new board members:

💚 Joan Laidig, PhD, a retired clinical psychologist, ceramic artist, and longtime Food Pantry volunteer who is passionate about fighting food insecurity

💚 Jessie Mosqueda, a community development and corporate philanthropy leader with 15+ years of experience in grantmaking, public–private partnerships, and economic mobility

Bret, thank you for your dedication to our mission and to our neighbors. We’re so grateful for all you’ve given. 🙏
