Fire Family Foundation The Fire Family Foundation was founded by Firefighters First Credit Union in 2008 to provide financial assistance to firefighters and their families.

As the charitable hand of Firefighters First Credit Union, the mission of the Fire Family Foundation is to support firefighters and their families in times of need. History:

After 9/11, when 343 firefighters lost their lives, Firefighters First Credit Union received an outpouring of donations to support the New York City firefighter community. The Credit Union used these funds to make a significant positive impact on firefighters’ families, inspiring Credit Union leaders to establish a nonprofit foundation focused exclusively on serving firefighter families. Founded in 2008, the Fire Family Foundation is dedicated to supporting the firefighter community, whose members risk their lives every day to protect our lives and property. We support firefighters who are experiencing hardship and offer them hope in their time of need. Firefighters First Credit Union supports the Fire Family Foundation’s overhead costs, so 100% of donations go directly to support the mission. Understanding how trauma can affect spouses and families is part of supporting the whole fire family.

One participant described what they valued about our virtual session, Understanding the Impact of Trauma:

“Being with others who truly understand and learning about the different types of trauma and how they affect spouses and families.”

By bringing education and shared experiences together, these sessions give fire families space to ask questions, learn and connect.

A shared challenge can create opportunities to speak up, listen and lean on one another.

At our Prepare to Launch Youth Summit, team-building activities gave teens the chance to practice communication, problem-solving and working toward a common goal.

Each activity had a purpose: to help young people explore their strengths and practice skills they can use in school, at home and in future workplaces.

The retreat created space for couples to focus on their relationships while spending time with other fire families who understand the demands of the lifestyle.

Our Prepare to Launch Youth Summit brought teens together to share experiences, meet new people and spend time with peers who share a connection to the fire service.

Sometimes, that realization is the most meaningful part of coming together.

A participant shared these words after our virtual session, Understanding the Impact of Trauma. The session offered an opportunity to learn about trauma’s effects on fire families and connect with others who understand their experiences.

This is why we create spaces for education and connection—so members of our fire family have opportunities to feel heard, understood and supported.

There are moments in the fire service when the entire community pauses. 💙

The recent firefighter line-of-duty deaths and injuries during these devastating wildfires have left our hearts heavy.

To the families grieving unimaginable loss, the firefighters who have been injured, the crews still working tirelessly on the fire line, and every fire family carrying the weight of these events—we are holding you close.

For those who love someone in the fire service, tragedies like these don't stay on the news...they come home. They remind us how real the risks are and can bring worry, fear, and difficult memories to the surface.

If you're feeling anxious, emotional, or simply overwhelmed, please know you're not alone.

Now, more than ever, let's check in on one another. Reach out to a fellow fire spouse. Call a friend. Hug your loved ones a little tighter. Make space for honest conversations and remember that asking for support is a sign of strength.

At the Fire Family Foundation, we believe caring for firefighters also means caring for the families who stand beside them. Together, we are stronger than the challenges we face alone.

Please join us in keeping the injured firefighters, the families of those we have lost, and every firefighter still serving on the fire line in your thoughts and prayers.
