No School Wednesday, Sept 6 - HEAT
My earlier email proved to be overly optimistic. Projected temperatures have risen, and there already was not much of a margin for error. Unfortunately, we still see a projection of 94 degrees RealFeel on accuweather.com; this is not an appropriate environment for teaching and learning.

We look forward to beginning our school year Thursday!

No School Tuesday, September 5-HEAT
We are all looking forward to the first day of school and the traditions this exciting occasion brings. However, the current forecast of insufferably hot temperatures is forcing us to postpone this exciting ritual. We will not have school tomorrow, Tuesday, September 5. For reference, we use the RealFeel measure on accuweather.com as our most significant variable in making such important decisions. Tomorrow's forecast calls for a RealFeel of 97 degrees at 1P making teaching and learning very difficult in our classrooms, the vast majority of which do not have air conditioning.

We do not currently anticipate having to cancel any more school days as the temperatures cool after tomorrow. However, we will inform you as soon as we can if this changes as we understand families have to make plans for care of their children.

Thank you and stay cool!

Arming School Staff
First, I would like to apologize for not sending this information sooner. I did not anticipate such widespread media coverage, a misjudgment I should be better than as I enter my sixth year as your Superintendent. You should have learned about the following developments from me, not from an external source.

Last Thursday, our Board of Education voted to allow selected staff members to carry a firearm on school property. Approximately one year ago, the state of Ohio gave schools more latitude to arm staff as a method of hardening our facilities against intruders. Since then, we have seen a continuation of school shootings and other violent acts in districts across the country. We find it prudent to provide specific, carefully selected staff members with the ability to arm themselves as one more deterrent to mass violence. Importantly, we are not publicly identifying these staff members as the element of the unknown is, in itself, an aggravating factor to those who may be selecting sites in which to enact a tragedy.

It is very important to note that our Board of Education holds final discretion in actually deciding who to allow to carry a firearm on our premises. We will carefully discuss each potential scenario in executive session, as allowed by Ohio Revised Code. We will review the potential carrier's personal and professional background and scope of duties as we assess their ability to add this responsibility to their role. Further, we will work closely with the Parma Police Department to ensure that our staff members who carry receive similar training to our local police officers. The Parma Police Department has been an important partner in our work and we look forward to continued collaboration as we add this means of keeping our schools safe.

It is very sad that we even have to have such conversations and take such actions. However, we must continue to take advantage of as many tools as we possibly can to keep our students safe.

Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Charlie
