Next Friday, the Paul Miller law will take effect, meaning if you are seen driving while holding your phone, reading messages, texting, or even on a phone, you can now be stopped and cited, so let's take this opportunity to elevate our driving habits and prioritize safety by using all hands-free devices while operating your vehicle.

05/24/2026

Drivers take note:

Beginning June 6, you can be cited for driving while using a hand-held device in Pennsylvania, even while stopped at a red light or traffic jam.

“Paul Miller’s Law” went into effect last year, but in the first year police could only issue warnings. June 6 marks the date when drivers convicted of distracted driving going forward will be subject to a $50 fine. There are exceptions for contacting emergency officials and hands-free technology.

Signed by Gov. Shapiro in 2024, “Paul Miller’s Law” was named for a 21-year-old Scranton man who was killed in a 2010 crash involving a truck driver who was using a cell phone.
