April 28, 1971 the West Virginia State Legislature ratified the 26th Amendment of the United States Constitution lowering the voting age from 21 to 18.
West Virginia Congressman Jennings Randolph first introduced the Amendment in 1942 and every year thereafter until he was successful in getting the legislation passed.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary, the Wood County Clerk's Office visited PHS and PSHS to give high school students the opportunity to register to vote. 146 students completed voter registration applications. Many other students have already registered.
Williamstown, Parkersburg Catholic and Wood County Christian Schools are 100% registered for eligible students.
Thanks to PHS teacher Amanda Greathouse and PSHS teacher Scott Miller for helping to organize the event.
