The Town of Parker Town Council considered four main items during their meeting, along with a fifth, last-minute agenda item about a zoning change proposal for a vacant lot. Here’s a summary of the items and a brief analysis of their implications, including the pros and cons of the zoning change discussed:

1. Passes-Approval of Overage Fee for AZ SMART Fund Grant ($143,615.06): This item involved approving additional funds for engineering design and construction to install rolled curb, gutter, and sidewalks on various street segments. The grant covers part of the cost, but the town is responsible for overages. Pros: Improvements could enhance pedestrian safety and town aesthetics. Cons: The town covers the overage, which may impact its budget for other projects .
2. Passes-Agreement with Western Alarm Services for Police Department Tenant Improvement Access Control System Installation ($16,479.28): This agreement aimed to enhance security at the police department through an upgraded access control system. Pros: Increases building security and access control, potentially improving safety for department personnel. Cons: Financial cost to the town, though necessary for security improvements .
3. Passes-Memorandum of Understanding with Colorado River Crisis Services for the Office Against Women Act Grant: This MOU with Colorado River Crisis Services would support initiatives under the Office Against Women Act. Pros: Supports vital services and programs for women, enhancing community welfare and safety. Cons: The document did not specify cons but ongoing funding and resource allocation need careful management .
4. No Action taken-Discussion on the Use of South East Corner of Western Park for a New Location for the Parker Area Chamber of Commerce: Consideration for allocating park space for Chamber of Commerce use. Pros: Potentially benefits the Chamber’s visibility and community engagement. Cons: May reduce public park space and requires evaluation of long-term community impact .
5. No action taken-Zoning Change for Vacant Lot at 900 S. Desert Ave. (Last-Minute Item): Proposed change from C-2 to Office Transitional Zoning to facilitate the development of affordable and workforce housing through the placement of four park model structures (approx. 400sqft each). Pros: Addresses housing affordability and availability, supporting workforce housing needs. Cons: Changes in zoning can have broader implications on local development patterns and community character. Discussion included considerations about the buyer’s proposed use and its alignment with community needs and zoning policies.

Public Prompt for Feedback:
Your input matters and is considered on decisions affecting our town. I invite Town of Parker residents to share their opinions on the Use of Park property for a new Parker Area Chamber of Commerce site and proposed zoning change at 900 S. Desert Ave. from C-2 to Office Transitional Zoning to allow for the development of affordable and workforce housing.

I am thrilled to extend my warmest congratulations to Emmett & Lori Brinkerhoff on the grand opening of Boondocks RV Station. While I regret that I cannot be there in person due to a family visit over Veterans Day weekend, my excitement for this new addition to our community remains strong.

Boondocks RV Station promises to be a fantastic resource for both our local patrons and visitors, offering a range of essential services including RV dumping, Hydro-Jet RV tank cleaning, propane, firewood, water, and ice. This establishment not only brings a new business to our town but also enhances the experience of those who travel to Parker with their recreational vehicles.

I encourage everyone to join in the celebration of this milestone for the Brinkerhoffs and our community. The grand opening is scheduled for November 13, 2023, at 10 AM, located at 1721 California Ave. This is a wonderful opportunity to witness the fruition of hard work and dedication, and to show our support for local entrepreneurship.

Wishing Emmett & Lori the very best in this exciting venture. Let's come together to welcome Boondocks RV Station to Parker and show them the strong community spirit that makes our town so special.

Thank you for sharing your ideas.

From a Town of Parker Resident:
Hi Rey! I had an idea on how to possibly help with the vandalism at the town parks.

I was thinking adding walking paths around the perimeter of the parks would encourage more foot traffic. Leading to more supervision. Could encourage the start of walking groups. Label the paths so people can track their miles.

Nicer place to walk than the main roads 🤷🏼‍♀️
