Summit Water Distribution Company

Summit Water Distribution Company Summit Water Distribution Company is a non-profit, mutual, shareholder owned company. It was a private venture that began with the end in mind.

Summit Water Distribution Company was established in 1979 by visionaries who foresaw the growth and development that would take place in Park City and the Snyderville Basin in the coming years. Infrastructure was constructed as a long term investment in the future. The company’s humble beginnings consisted of one full time employee and three unpaid Board Members. The original assets of the company

consisted of one working well and four miles of distribution main lines. Today the company has grown exponentially to serve the needs of its shareholders. Summit Water, as a non-profit entity, provides very effective service from nine full time employees and a still unpaid Board of Directors of seven members. High quality, low cost water is provided to our shareholders with ten wells, one spring, and a water treatment plant. Storage has grown from one million gallons to 9 reservoirs totaling 5.2 million gallons. We have a highly trained staff of operators totaling 7 individuals with over 100 years experience. The guiding principal of Summit Water is to provide high quality water at a fair and reasonable price. We continually exceed mandates for clean water across the full spectrum of testing required by the EPA and the State of Utah.

Did you know that outdoor water consumption typically accounts for at least 50% of residential water use?

💦Water your lawn only when it needs it. Over watering the lawn is a common wasteful practice. Step on your lawn; if the grass springs back up when you remove pressure, it doesn’t need watering.

💦Set your irrigation schedule for the season and your local conditions. Watering times will vary by season, climate, soil type, and plant types. Remember to turn off irrigation when it rains.

💦Upgrade your irrigation hardware. For example, replace high flow sprinklers with drip irrigation (where appropriate).

💦Water during the cool part of the day. Reduce evaporation by watering lawns and plants only at night or early morning before dawn.

💦Check your irrigation system often for broken sprinkler heads and drip system tubing. Broken sprinkler heads waste water and can potentially damage your landscape. Check sprinkler heads, drip system emitters, and drip lines for breaks and cracks.

We’ve noticed an increase in shareholder leaks over the last week, many of them likely related to irrigation systems as watering season ramps up.

Now is a great time to check your sprinkler system for broken heads, stuck valves, leaking drip lines, or overspray. Even small leaks can waste a surprising amount of water over time.

We also encourage shareholders to regularly monitor their water usage through Eye On Water and to avoid ignoring leak notification emails. Those alerts can help you catch issues early before they turn into higher water bills, landscape damage, or unnecessary water waste.

A quick check today can save water, money, and help protect our shared water resources all season long. Thank you for doing your part to conserve water and keep your irrigation systems running efficiently! 💙

Why change to a smart controller?

💦Adjusts watering automatically based on local weather conditions
💦Prevents overwatering during rain or cooler temperatures
💦Saves water by watering only when your landscape needs it
💦Allows remote control and scheduling from your phone
💦Can pause watering automatically during wind, rain, or freezing temperatures

Many shareholders who incur overuse charges by exceeding their water share allowance do so because of outdoor irrigation. In many cases, homeowners do not realize how often their irrigation system is running, whether it’s watering too many days per week, running multiple cycles per day, or failing to adjust for changing weather conditions. Upgrading to a smart irrigation controller helps you stay in control of your water usage by automatically adjusting watering schedules based on local weather and landscape needs, helping ensure you are not using more water than you intend.

It’s that time of year to start prepping your irrigation system and testing your backflow device, but hold off on watering until Memorial Weekend! 🌱💧

Waiting to water until temperatures are regularly reaching the 70s helps:
• Watering too early can encourage shallow root systems, making lawns less drought tolerant later in summer
• Prevent lawn disease and pest issues
• Spring soils still hold moisture from snow and rain, so most lawns don't need supplemental watering yet
• Avoid unnecessary watering during cooler spring weather

Before turning your irrigation system on for the season, make sure to monitor your Eye On Water app closely to check for leaks or unusual usage. We are already seeing an increase in irrigation leaks through the metering system as systems are being activated.

A quick check now can help prevent wasted water, costly repairs, and high water bills later.

Let’s work together to conserve water and keep our landscapes healthy this season!
