Today, the kids at LAW Camp got a crash course in the skills they’ll need to be firefighters from SCFD1 Firefighter Rob. The kids did a great job and we hope to see these potential future recruits join the SCFD1 family in the future!

Today we take a moment to remember Firefighter Gerald Lee “Gube” Lloyd. Firefighter Lloyd gave the ultimate sacrifice on this date, June 13, 1973, while responding to a house fire in Oaklawn. The tender he was driving overturned at 47th and Broadway and he died as a result of his injuries.

Gerald was a graduate of Campus High School, where he was a leader in many fields. He was vice president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, president of the Letterman’s Club, and captain of the Campus football and baseball teams. He attended Friends University and was a member of the Falcons football team. Rest in peace Gerald, and thank you for your service.

Tower rescue operations continued this week with 32B. Cranes like this create unique challenges for our rescue teams including finding sufficient anchor points, identifying the best spot to lower the patient, combating Kansas wind, and pre-planning the gear needed before the 267ft climb.

Rescue 32 and Squad 32 A shift trained with a local construction company on tower operations. Crews climbed to the top of this 267ft crane to train on lowering the crane operator in the scenario if he were to have a medical emergency. Crews setup a full lowering system to the ground below and crews repeled down.

This week marks a special moment for Sedgwick County Fire District 1 as family tradition and service come together.

We are proud to welcome two new firefighters to our organization who share a unique connection to our leadership team. One recruit is the son of a Division Chief, while another is the son-in-law of a Division Chief. While family ties may have introduced them to the fire service, it was their hard work, dedication and commitment that earned them a place in Recruit Class 2601 and now as members of our department.

SCFD1 has a tradition of family members of new probationary firefighters assembling helmets before graduation.

Congratulations to SCFD1 Fire Marshal Brad Crisp, Lt. Rusty Vollentine and K-9 Benny! Today, the three of them received a Certificate of Commendation from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office for the work they did assisting with an investigation into an apartment fire in Clearwater.

After receiving approval from the Office of Kansas State Fire Marshal (OKSFM) to assist with the investigation, the three of them determined the apartment fire was intentionally set. The occupant of the apartment has now been charged with multiple counts of aggravated arson.

At the current time, Chief Crisp, Lt Vollentine and K9 Benny have invested approximately 100 hours of staff time investigating, completing reports affidavits and going to court on behalf of the OKSFM. Thank you for your work. This is a well-deserved honor!

P.S. K-9 Benny has retired and is celebrating on the couch.
