Today, SCFD1 joined firefighters from across the state to take part in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Epic Center in downtown Wichita. Participants climbed 110 flights of stairs in full gear to honor the 343 New York City firefighters who gave their lives on that tragic day.

Today at Firehouse 33, we were reminded that the memory of Sept. 11, 2001, continues to live on through the next generations.

Maize High School students stopped by to write heartfelt messages and draw the American flag in chalk on our driveway. They also joined the firefighters in commemoration at the flagpole during the remembrance ceremony. The crew at Station 33 discussed that tragic day and the lasting impact it has.

Thank you to each and every one of these thoughtful kids. You are a great example!

Today we take a moment to honor Todd David Colton and remember how important safety, crew integrity and accountability are. After just nine months on the job, Firefighter Colton lost his life to heat stroke on the scene of a brush fire September 6, 1990.

Numerous firefighter safety and health initiatives, including fire ground rehabilitation, personnel accountability, personal alert safety systems, wild land firefighting gear, and many others were instituted as a result of this untimely and unfortunate event. The review of this tragic incident by SCFD and national organizations has saved countless firefighter lives nationwide. We continue to honor Firefighter Colton by taking every step possible to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again.

SCFD1 is teaming up with the American Red Cross Kansas and Derby Recreation Commission to SOUND THE ALARM.

Every year, housefires claim about 2,600 lives. In the event of a house fire, a working smoke alarm is your best defense, as it immediately alerts you to the danger. During Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 4-10, 2026, SCFD1 will be installing smoke alarms and providing inspections for FREE in the Oaklawn area.

Firehouse 35 in Goddard had some very special guests yesterday! Eisenhower High School (EHS) Life Skills Program visited the fire station and learned what Sedgwick County Firefighters and EMS do everyday to help residents when they call 911. Our special visitors got to meet the on-duty FIRE/EMS personnel and got a VIP tour of the fire trucks, ambulance and the fire station. At the end of the visit, K-9 Latitude demonstrated the difference he makes in the fire servicešŸ¾

Sedgwick County Fire District 1 is very grateful for this visit and canā€™t wait to have them over again in the future!

SCFD1 crews took the AquaEye out on the water last week for some search and rescue training. The AquaEye Sonar System allows first responders to pinpoint the location of someone underwater by using AI technology to distinguish the difference between a human and other items under water. Due to extremely dry conditions, dangerously hot temperatures, low humidity and strong winds, Sedgwick County Fire District 1 has implemented a burn ban effective IMMEDIATELY. All Fire District cities in Sedgwick County, in addition to the cities of Valley Center, Colwich, Mt. Hope, Cheney, Clearwater and Mulvane, have implemented a burn ban.


This is a combined effort of all full-time and volunteer fire departments in Sedgwick County to combat the current dangerous fire conditions. No outdoor burning is allowed including any open burns, chimeneas and/or other outdoor fireplaces. Active burn permits will be suspended, and no new burn permits will be issued. This burn ban does not include fires used for food preparation such as barbecue grills.

SCFD1 will evaluate the status of fire weather conditions weekly and will rescind the ban when conditions have improved.

Violations of the burn ban will be taken seriously, and violators could be cited for non-compliance. Please contact your local fire department with questions, concerns and/or to learn more about preventing a wildland fire near your home.

Thank you for doing your part to stop grass fires and in turn, keep our communities and our first responders safe.
