Today is not National BBQ Day, but spending time with friends and family is invaluable.

Today is not a day to thank current members of the US Armed Forces, or even veterans who returned home, although showing appreciation for those who serve is always important.

Today is a day to remember and honor the men and women of the armed forces who gave their lives in service to this country. It is a day to honor those who never returned home.

So enjoy your family BBQs, your trips out of town, and the holiday sales. But please take a moment to think about those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Regardless of your feelings about war or politics, Memorial Day is about honor, remembrance, and respect.

National Police Week is a time to recognize the service and sacrifice behind the badge.

The men and women of the Summit County Sheriff’s Office serve this community with professionalism, integrity, and commitment every single day. Whether visible or behind the scenes, their work helps keep Summit County safe year round.

This week, we also honor the law enforcement officers across the country who gave their lives in the line of duty and the families who continue to carry that loss.

Thank you to all who serve.

National Correctional Officers Week!

The men and women of our corrections division who manage challenges most never see. Their work requires patience, professionalism, and the ability to make the right call in difficult moments.

They protect our community while also recognizing the humanity of those in their care, creating an environment where safety, respect, and the opportunity for positive change can exist together.

New Evacuation Alert Siren

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office has implemented a new, distinctly different siren tone on our vehicles. This tone will be used during critical life safety emergencies, most commonly when neighborhoods need to be evacuated, such as fast moving wildfires.

If you hear this unique tone in your area, it means an emergency is occurring and deputies will be providing instructions over loudspeakers to give you specific direction.

When you hear it, pay attention and be ready to act immediately.

This new alert helps us quickly notify residents and move people to safety when every second counts.

🎥 Watch the video to hear the tone and an example of the message you will receive.

Francisco Alejandro Santos-Morales, a 31-year-old male previously identified as a suspect, has been taken into custody in the Davis County area by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. Santos-Morales has been booked on felony charges of desecration of a dead body and obstruction of justice.

This arrest follows the earlier arrest of Reina Chavez Sandobal in connection with this case.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation to its Investigations Division for their work over the past six days, which led to the arrest of two individuals. SCSO also thanks the U.S. Marshals Service, as well as law enforcement partners in Layton City and the Davis County area, for their assistance.

This release does not constitute a determination of guilt, and all individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

On March 26, 2026, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) received a report of a deceased individual discovered off a rural road near Brown’s Canyon Road in Summit County.

A medicolegal investigation, including an autopsy, indicated the cause of death was likely blunt force trauma. Detectives quickly identified the decedent and initiated a homicide investigation, which led them to the decedent’s wife, a resident of Midvale, Utah.

On April 1, 2026, Reina Chavez Sandobal was taken into custody by SCSO detectives and booked into the Summit County Jail on felony charges of desecration of a dead human body and obstruction of justice. She was arrested at her residence in Midvale.

SCSO detectives have also identified Francisco Morales, a 31-year-old male, as a second suspect in this investigation. Morales is believed to have been staying in the Midvale area; however, his current whereabouts are unknown. He was last known to be traveling in a maroon 2009 Honda Civic with Utah license plate “5ETHO.”

Francisco Morales is considered dangerous. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to contact the Summit County Sheriff’s Office at 435-615-3601.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation
