Most people think a ceilidh is a night of Scottish dancing. The real meaning is older, quieter, and a great deal more important. 🪻

The Gaelic word ceilidh simply means a visit. In the old Highlands and Islands, before television and radio and even before most homes held many books, the ceilidh was the beating heart of community life. On a winter evening the neighbours would gather in one house around the peat fire, and the night would fill with storytelling, song, poetry, riddles, news and the passing on of family history. There might be a fiddle or a set of pipes, and there might be dancing, but the dancing was never the point. The gathering itself was the point.

This was how an entire culture kept itself alive without writing much of it down. Genealogies, legends, proverbs, the words of songs hundreds of years old, all of it was carried from one generation to the next by voice, in a warm room, on the strength of memory alone. When emigration and the Clearances scattered Highland families across the world, they carried the ceilidh with them, and communities from Cape Breton to New Zealand kept the word and the habit. Today it often means an organised dance, and that is no bad thing, but the older ceilidh, neighbours simply gathering to share what they know, is the truer treasure.

A people who gather to remember together can never be wholly scattered. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The blood remembers.
