That is the share of HRC’s outpatient mental health clients who live in Clark County. Almost half. And in our most recent reporting period, not one person waited in line. Everyone who asked for mental health or substance use treatment was enrolled within two weeks, and most much sooner.

If you have been putting off making the call because you assumed there would be a wait, or a long drive, or a runaround, this is your sign.

Six treatment groups meet regularly at our Forsythe Center at 406 N. 2nd St. in Marshall, covering everything from trauma recovery to wellness planning.

Labor Day is about work. Real work, the kind that puts something on the table and something in a person's chest that a paycheck alone does not explain.

Everybody deserves that. Everybody.

For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Edgar and Clark Counties, the doors to that kind of work are opening wider than they used to.

Competitive integrated employment means a real job, in a real workplace, alongside coworkers with and without disabilities, earning the wage anybody else would earn for that job.

It is not a favor. It is a neighbor in Brocton, Kansas, or Chrisman clocking in, learning the work, and being counted on.

Through the Dignity in Pay Program, HRC helps people find that work and helps local employers find dependable people. Choices are widening, and that is worth celebrating on a day set aside for labor.

If you are raising a child or caring for an adult with an intellectual or developmental disability, you already know the math. There is no clock-out time. There is no substitute teacher.

HRC's Voucher Respite program is new this year, and it exists for one reason: so you can rest.

Here is how it works. You choose the caregiver. It might be a home health agency, a special recreation program, a community college program, or someone you already know and trust with your family. We help you identify and arrange it, and the program covers the approved cost through a voucher.

It is available at every age, from birth onward, for families who do not currently have Waiver Services. Intake is simple, and something like a school IEP is often enough documentation. Because this is funded by the State of Illinois, every family is welcome regardless of ability to pay.

Serving Edgar, Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Douglas, Crawford, Jasper and Vermilion Counties. A family may receive respite from one agency at a time, and services are first come, first served as funding allows.

Rest is not a luxury. It is how caregivers keep going.

September is National Recovery Month, and we are marking it the best way we know how. Together, outside, with food.

Community Wellness Walk and Recovery Picnic
-Saturday, September 12
-10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
-Twin Lakes Park, Paris

Hosted by HRC Recovery Support and the Edgar County ROSC Council.

There will be a walk, community booths, live music from Scott Blake and Gypsie Soul Revival, tie dye, prize drawings, and a meal made possible by the outpouring of support from local businesses and a good many home cooks. Megan Cusick and Michelle Creech will speak.

Bring your family. Bring a lawn chair. Bring a neighbor who could use a good afternoon.

Recovery does not happen alone, and neither does a gathering like this one.

September is Su***de Prevention Month.

We want to say something plainly, because plain words matter here.

If you are carrying thoughts of su***de, you are not broken and you are not beyond reach. People come through this. People do recover, and they go on to have ordinary good mornings again. Treatment works. Help is real.

You do not have to be in crisis to reach out. Sometimes the bravest thing a person does is tell one other human being that the season has gotten heavy.

Here in Edgar and Clark Counties, there are places to start. The Living Room is a safe harbor at our Life Center in Paris, where you can call or walk in Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and talk with someone who will listen. If the middle of the night is when it gets hardest, the Crisis Line and 988 are answered any hour of any day.

Whoever is reading this, and whatever kind of week it has been, you matter here.

Caregiving is a calling. It is also tiring.

If you care for a family member with an intellectual or developmental disability, you already know the days do not really end. There is no clocking out. And there are seasons when weary is the only word that fits.

HRC’s Voucher Respite program was built for exactly that. Respite covers paid hours of care so you can rest, keep an appointment, go to a ball game, or sit on the porch with a cup of coffee and some quiet.

Here is the part families tell us matters most. You choose who comes through the door. Someone your family already knows and trusts. We handle the vouchers and the paperwork.

We put out a thank-you list a little while back, and we left people off it.

Not on purpose. Gifts have kept coming in for the Community Wellness Walk and Recovery Picnic, right up through this week, and the list outgrew the post. So here it is again, all the way through, because everybody on it earned their name in print.

Thank you to Walmart, Pearman's, Tec Doc, Kurly Q, Dairy Queen, Monical's, Paris Family Restaurant, Rocky's Italian Bistro, Savoia's, Los Tres, Burger King, Hand Me Down Resale, Huffman Automotive, Shine Dynasty, Loco Tattoo, Lori's Pin and Needles, The Rec, Thompson Thrift, the Elks Club, LakeRidge Christian Church, the Edgar County CARE Coalition, and Gypsy Soul Revival.

Every taco, every door prize, every table under that shelter came from somebody in this community who could have said no and said yes instead. When you are in their doors this month, tell them you saw this.

Taco bar. Face painting and tie dye for the kids. Door prizes for grown ups and kids both. Music. Resource tables from folks all over the county who can actually help. And three neighbors telling their own recovery stories out loud, which tends to be the part that stays with people on the drive home.

You do not have to be in recovery to come. You do not need to know a soul there. Bring a lawn chair, and bring somebody with you.

With Labor Day coming up next week, we have been thinking about what a job really means.

It is not only the paycheck, though the paycheck surely matters. It is having somewhere to be on Tuesday morning. It is being missed when you are out sick. It is your name written on the schedule by the back door.

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities want the same thing everybody wants. Real work, real wages, alongside real coworkers.

That is the heart of Dignity in Pay. Illinois is widening the road for people with disabilities who want community jobs, and HRC is here to help our neighbors find work that actually fits them. Some folks want full time. Some want a couple of shifts a week. Some are ready this morning and some need a season of support first. Every one of those is a good answer.

And to the employers reading this, hear us plainly. Hiring someone with a disability is not charity. It is a good decision. The people we walk alongside show up, work hard, and stay. Ask a manager in Casey, Chrisman, or Marshall who has already taken that step.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day.

Across Edgar and Clark Counties there are families who have lost someone. There are also families sitting at kitchen tables this morning with someone who came back. Someone who found their footing. Someone walking through a season of renewal.

Both of those things are true, and we hold them together today.
Here is what we want every neighbor to know. Overdose is preventable. Recovery is real. People heal, rebuild, and go on to live full and ordinary good lives right here in our towns.

If you are walking this road with someone you love, you do not have to carry it alone. Our Recovery Support team walks alongside people in Paris, Marshall, Casey, Chrisman, Martinsville, and every community in between. No lectures. No judgment. A listening ear and a next step.
