Litter can travel from streets to storm drains to streams, and get carried into our neighborhoods, far beyond where it started. Keeping litter secure is one of the simplest ways to protect Montgomery County’s waterways.

Keep Paris/Henry County Beautiful partnered with Keep Tennessee River Beautiful for a successful lake shore cleanup on Kentucky Lake with 17 volunteers. One of the most common pieces of litter we found were tires, which thankfully will be recycled along with all metal that was found. A great time was had by all in attendance! Let’s keep our waterways clean!

❄️🚮 Winter may mean fewer people outside — but litter doesn’t take a season off.

When the weather turns cold, fewer cleanups happen, which means trash can sit longer along roadsides, waterways, and public spaces. Over time, that litter still breaks down, washes into streams, and impacts wildlife and communities.

Even small actions help this time of year. If you see litter and it’s safe to pick up, you’re making a difference — no matter the season. 💚

Composting yardwaste at home is a simple way to reduce waste! Composting is nature’s way of recycling. When you collect grass clippings and leaves from your lawn and add them to a compost pile, you can use it to enrich the soil in your garden.

Plus, you’ll help prevent soil erosion, conserve water, and reduce the volume of materials sent to the landfill.

Be sure to follow City of Omaha guidelines. See this page for tips! https://www.keepomahabeautiful.org/resources/leave-it-on-the-lawn.html

4,198 lbs. of trash removed from Kentucky Lake of the Tennessee River!!! 🤩

After two rescheduled dates due to flooding, we had six faithful volunteers come out for our final cleanup in the 7th annual Tennessee River Grand Slam Cleanup Series in Dover/Paris, Tenn./Murray, Ky., and, WOW, did they make a big impact!

The volunteer trash haul included an impressive 32 bags of litter, 38 feet of barge line, 4.5 tires, THREE channel markers (two green, one red), a large boat fuel tank, a 55-gallon barrel, a jet ski lift, the fiberglass top half of a boat, a 15-foot concrete/metal/foam dock, and more!

Thank you so much to Diann McGuire (a true warrior) at Keep Paris/Henry County Beautiful - Henry County Litter Program for not only collaborating in the organization of this cleanup, but joining and even staying to toss the trash from the trash boat into the dumpster after the cleanup.

We also had TVA employee and our river mile adoptee, Phillip Toon, join, contributing in a big way to our cleanup with his passion for the river and strength that really came in handy when you have things like 400-pound channel markers on the shore...

Thanks to our partners at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area - U.S. Forest Service (and Friends of Land Between the Lakes) for letting us launch from their boat ramp and for using their heavy equipment to haul away the massive channel markers and 15-foot concrete dock that we hauled in from the cleanup. Thanks to Kinsey LLC Tree Service for donating the 40-yard dumpster to haul away all of the trash collected by our awesome volunteers.

As usual with our river cleanups, this event was only possible thanks to all of the committed collaboration of many partners and volunteers. Thank you so much for making such a difference for the Tennessee River watershed! đź’Ş
